Jurisdiction means both the authority or power of the court to determine a dispute between parties as well as the territory over which the legal authority of a court extends. Link

I know jurisdiction is all about authority being restricted to a certain place. There are places where you cannot have authority if your authority is not recognized by law.

An example is like a police man who travels to another state or country and expects to have the same authority where he is. He might be respected as a police man but he cannot function there as a police man because he does not have authority there or should I say he does not have a jurisdiction there.

It is a good system because it helps keep a boundary on the extent at which some of those who have authority misuse their authority.

When you want to act outside your jurisdiction, you would be reminded you do not have a jurisdiction there. So, you don't have to disturb yourself where you don't have a jurisdiction.
