What Needs To change

In a country where everything seems to be going backwards living in the northern part of Ghana can be quite annoying sometimes. I say quite annoying to make it sound better; believe me.

Am a boy who has spent all my life in Ghana and honestly at times I wonder what we have spent 60-something years of our independent days doing. Have we been building the country how we want it to be for the future generation or have we put people in office to take and take from us all in the name of being our leaders?

As I grow, I tend to understand a lot of things I didn’t understand in the past and if I had the power I would take the power the two majority parties have on this country. In this country, so many things are not functioning like in other countries and when you look at it you just know that even the opposition party saying they will do better when they come into power is just mere words and means absolutely nothing to them. They always say they will do better but the moment they are put into power they claim the other party did a lot of damage to the country hence they will need more and more time to fix the country as they claim.

Is this a strategy to keep them in power or just one of their numerous excuses for failing the people of the country?

This will be a long post if I want to talk about the problems in the whole of the country so let’s just keep it to my town. As I said I live in the northern part of the country precisely tamale.

In our constituency, a lot of things aren’t working but the first people to blame is ourselves. Year in and year out we give the power to the same MP who has been in power for God knows how long. Before this coming election year, we had our eyes set on one man. The excuse we always gave for putting him in power was he belonged to our favorite party hence even if he didn’t do that work we still kept him there. Now this man was not a child, he was wise. When it was getting closer to election year or the time to decide to keep or take him out of office he always had a way of getting to us. He will suddenly start to work on the roads and do the little things we have always wanted him to attend to.

We saw this and always gave him the power. Last four years we had the chance to take him out of office but instead, most people voted for him because he was part of their favorite party. It was a close gap with the opposition party which showed that the good people of the town were angry with him so the party delegates took the bold decision of taking him out for this year's election. If it was up to me even the other one coming wouldn’t get the votes. Yes, we should try a different party and see but it’s hard for her to work if her party doesn’t make it to power.

After blaming ourselves, the next thing I think we need as a town is good roads. Now this is not only a town problem but a country problem. The amount of bad roads we have in this country is appalling. From bad roads to bad road maintenance. The road can be made a few years ago and when you see the amount of potholes you will wonder if the contractor did a good job.

Even after those roads are patched we still have those problems popping up now and then a few weeks or months later.

In my town, a lot of things are not how they should be and the first point of correction is the people living in the town. After we can fix ourselves and the bad choices we make we will be better as a town.
