Getting the Third Power Star
As I had got to Moleville and was tasked to get in the cave to rescue some kids, and after some stuff here and there, I eventually made my way to Punchinello, who fought by summoning Bob-Ombs, who each time summoned bigger bombs after taking enough damage.
...Until he attempts to summon an even bigger one, and accidentally gets stomped by a huge one that also catches Mario and the gang with its explosion.
But of course, they survived that, and the explosion happened to bring down the power star that was literally sitting in a high place near the boss fight entrance, ending their current quest...
Except for having to go through a minecart course on your way out.
But when that is done, now its time to head over to the Booster Tower.
The Booster Tower misadventures
Bowser's sitting outside thinking about how he misses his castle, but as soon as he sees Mario, he pretends that he's just preparing to raid the castle...and invites you to his Koopa Troop. Oh, and Peach is at the top of the tower, as the owner of it is intending to marry her or something.
But for what the game [and Mario] care, he actually has just joined your party. You can only have three members on a fight, so you have to swap Geno or Mallow to carry him around, and while he's slow enough to actually have to wait for enemies to attack first in a handful of cases unlike the rest, he does pack a punch and is leveled up to be on par with your usual team at this point.
Something interesting is that, while I expected I had to fight Booster after a minigame of hiding behind curtains from his crew, turns out that the minigamactually lets you skip that fight completely if you do it properly. I did that on the first try...and was surprised that when I did that but Booster opened the last curtain anyways, he didn't even mind my presence as I helped him find the Mario doll he was looking for.
Instead, the first boss fight here was against the two big guys that almost pushed me to defeat, but thankfully the chase I had to ensure to catch Booster running away with Peach was yet another minigame that led me to a town with an inn and a save point.
When you manage to get inside the Marrymore chapel where they are by rushing in with Bowser, the Snifits guarding the door accidentally bump into Peach and have her drop her stuff. The game says that something good might happen if you do it fast.
If you don't, Peach will go to give Mario a kiss anyways for helping her out...
...not.
The first time I saw this, I actually cackled pretty loudly- it really caught me off guard.
What also caught me off-guard is that if you actually get the things quickly...Peach actually gives little Mario the kiss she promised. And Bowser and Booster kiss each other by accident instead of you.
And then the last boss fight of this specific adventure actually took me two attempts, as the cake was pretty durable and actually had to get Mallow back instead of Geno in the rematch to have him as the reliable healer.
I actually lost Mario during the fight, so it was all about Bowser punching the living lights out of the living cake...and Mallow using HP Rain to keep both of them alive.
After enough damage, Booster will eat the whole cake...and call it a day. If you didn't fight him before, you don't actualy fight him here or have to escape with Peach again. She joins your party, but when you bring her back to the Mushroom Kingdom, she decides she has to stay.
Except that she actually escapes the castle and stays with your party, being the last new memeber you'll get.
The Pirate Ship is a rough ride
After that, you're tasked to talk with Frogfucius and give him a snack that you get from the store in the Mushroom Kingdom, then he'll tell you to go to Star Hill. There you'll find the road to the next village while turning on shiny flowers, and also find fallen wishes from other characters.
I wonder who's the one that wants to be a good plumber like his brother...
! [Hidden Spoiler Text] Unfortunately, no, Luigi does never appear in this game. This right here is the only nod in the game about his existence- unless you're playing the remake which apparently altered a later-game dialogue about a statue mocking Mario into a tribute to his brother.
From Star Hill you reach a town with very odd acting people, but the elder is the one who can tell you to head straight to the sea to deal with Jonathan Jones in his sunken ship.
...And after I arrived there, I discovered two things:
- Peach is a quite handy healer, as she can both heal health and status of not only one party member but all three at the same time...but she might still be bound to Mallow's weaknesses like low health and damage- also lacking Mallow's Thunderbolt for attacking all enemies at once.
- The enemies in the pirate ship...are tough.
...Really tough.
Imagine taking forever to barely survive taking down two Dry Bones...and to my absolute dismay, I could see that they behave just like in every other game and only stay temporarily down, so you should either avoid them at all costs, or if you survive a fight with them, run away from them before its too late. And just one encounter after somehow not dying from that, I did bite the dust.
So currently I would have to figure out how to either move around those dangerous enemies, or have to throw my hands up and grind my characters to level up at least a bit more + stacking myself with healing items in case I need to carry both attack bruises with me for these fights.
But until then, it still managed to be pretty entertaining overall, even if at least two or three times already it had me looking up stuff confused about where I had to go, such as that aforementioned Frogfucius snack.
