It just looks so sad. It's dead so it makes sense... But you know what I mean πŸ˜†πŸ˜’

So, this is a fish I had never heard about and I discovered today thanks to Twitter.

Scientifically described as Oxynotus bruniensis, this is a poorly understood dogfish shark found in the waters of Australia and New Zealand, in reported depths ranging from 45 to 1,067 m. It's commonly known as the prickly dogfish.

This name comes from their rough, sandpaper-like skin. Another notable thing about them is their weird body shape, with a prominent humped back and two large, sail-like dorsal fins. Due to their body shape, they are believed to be bad swimmers that mostly hover over the sea floor, possibly to conserve energy.

They are harmless to humans, with an adult length of about 75 cm (30 inches. Not much is known about their diet but they are carnivorous and believed to feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and fish.

As we species is classified as near threatened and it appears their numbers are continuously declining.

Usually I like to include a video or two in my strange animals posts but it seems there aren't any.

Anyways, this is a quick gist on this funny looking species. Here's a link to Wikipedia if you would like to read more on them, there's not much though as there is little research on them.

Oh almost forgot the most important thing. Yes it is edible! And according to some accounts on social media it is super tasty, lol.

In other news, I hear hive turned 4 today! I still remember the summer of 2017 when I was first trying out Steemit. Damn, time has really passed since then. Hopefully 2024 is the year hive gets a big win. 🀞

So...Happy birthday fellow hivians ? Sounds so corny πŸ˜†
