On some of my hiking trips in the Alps, I was able to find a Ant Hill. This is a hill full of Needles and other parts from the conifer and different plants that Ants use as their building material. It is always intersting when you see a documentary film about ants how strong they are in relation to their body weight. There are several ant species that build colonies like these but others don't and live in smaller groups. Ant colonies are often described as superorganisms because the ants appear to operate as one, collectively working together to support the colony. There are some colonies with only one queen and some with several queens.
The forest is the main habitat for ants but they colonized several other spots of the world. Even the more tougher regions like deserts and dry spots. Here in Austria I saw these hill building ants only in conifer forests like this one. And they probably also like higher ones better than the ones in the flatland, but this might be only an impression from my observations that must not be true.
When I see some Documentary movies about insects, ants are always one of the more interesting ones. And when David Attenborough is the Narrator I like it also a lot since his Voice is always so Special. He can create so much more interest just with his tone of the voice.
