Hello, beer lovers! 🍻
How are you this weekend? Will you work or relax more? We couldn't do anything in the field because it rained heavily all week.
Regardless, a beer in the evening is in order, I'm sure we all agree on that here in the Beer Community :)
And so today, for the 402nd #beersaturday in a row.
I have two new Slovenian beers waiting in the fridge for today, and I'll be happy to share the beer experience with you.
First, the one with less alcohol.
Pelicon Superlager
Brewed by Pivovarna Pelicon, Ajdovščina, Slovenia.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 4.7% ABV, IBU N/A. It's a Pilsner style beer.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Pelicon Superlager combines two of the most famous lager brewing schools - the German one, known for its precision and purity, and the Czech one, known for its drinkability. This unique Slovenian pilsner is brewed with quality ingredients without shortcuts or gimmicks. It is brewed with spring water from the cold Hubelj River, a diverse range of barley malts, and Slovenian Styrian Aurora hops. The icing on the cake comes from a selected yeast blend, which provides an extra layer of flavors and an almost crisp aftertaste, backed up by a pleasant bitterness.
I've tasted a few beers from this brewery that weren't bad. A few years ago, the brewery won the award for best Slovenian brewery from the Ratebeer community (which, unfortunately, no longer exists).
I would like to know about the 'crisp aftertaste'. Just what is that supposed to be? 🤔
The beer is bright orange, with an average head. It has no particular smell. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly, and in the mouth, I first taste the bitterness of the hops and herbs, which is balanced by the sweetness of the malted barley and the nuances of the honey.
The pleasant bitterness lingers in the aftertaste, and everything else disappears.
A refreshing and drinkable beer suitable for all seasons and all occasions! I didn't get the "crisp aftertaste" answer, though. Maybe I should have eaten some cereal with it, haha.
The beer is a classic lager, as it should be. It's available in local SPAR stores for a bargain price of €1.95, so I will definitely have some of these beers in my fridge.
As I mentioned, it rained heavily all week and flooded my field, so no exceptional work existed. Now, when will we start planting? Everything is soaked. 🤔
My field is right at the top, next to the water.
This photo is from Friday, today the water has receded a bit, but it's still raining.
Ah, we'll see what happens, let's move on!
Union IPA
Brewed by Pivovarna Union, Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 4.8% ABV, IBU 32. It's an IPA style beer.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Union premium IPA is an unfiltered beer made with top-fermenting yeast. The aroma will remind you of apricot, peach, and papaya, but once the beer has breathed a little, you will also detect orange peel, mint, and floral honey. At the end of the sip, you will be caressed by a just-right, medium-intensity bitterness that draws nicely into the aftertaste.
Union Brewery used to be the largest brewery in the region, in the Western Balkans. Then it was bought by Heineken, and with it, the second largest brewery, Laško, and now it's even bigger :)
This is not the first attempt by an industrial brewery to brew craft beer, the previous one Hoppy Lager was also good, so I'm curious.
The beer is cloudy, light amber-brown with a solid head. It smells fruity. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly. In the mouth, I first taste the sweetness of the malt and fruit, then apricots, and then the bitterness of the hops, which becomes increasingly predominant.
The hop bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for some time.
Drinkable and refreshing. A bit different IPA than I expected, usually in IPAs, the bitterness is dominant right away, but here, I tasted first the fruity sweetness and only later the hop bitterness. But far from that being a bad thing. A new dimension of IPA :) 😎
At the moment, they are only available in local SPAR stores. The price is reasonable, €1.54, but Union beers are practically everywhere here. No bar or pub in Slovenia doesn't have Union beer, so there is no need to keep it in the fridge :)
And what am I listening to when tasting beers and writing this? Something from
