Un automóvil es indispensable casi que en cualquier familia, sobre todo si sus integrantes necesitan viajar entre grandes distancias para asistir al trabajo, la escuela o desempeñar labores. Mi papá compró su Chevrolet Corsa 2001 hace unos ocho años, y hasta ahora, ha sido un fiel "amigo", sobre todo porque sus repuestos son económicos, consume poco combustible y muy pocas veces sus piezas se dañan. Creo que la adquirió de dicho Corsa ha sido un acierto.
No obstante, como toda posesión que es material, alguna vez hay que hacer algún cambio de pieza mecánica o un mantenimiento preventivo. Esta fue una de esas ocasiones en las que tuvimos que remplazar un elemento del Corsa y revisar otros.

A car is indispensable in almost any family, especially if its members need to travel long distances to go to work, school or perform their chores. My dad bought his 2001 Chevrolet Corsa about eight years ago, and so far, it has been a faithful "friend", especially because its spare parts are inexpensive, it consumes little fuel and its parts are rarely damaged. El automóvil estuvo sin circular por casi tres meses, ¿la razón? Las llantas estaban muy desgastadas y los amortiguadores inservibles. Esta es parte de la historia, fue la que, de manera directa, orilló a mi papá a realizar una revisión de la mecánica completa del tren delantero. Logramos solventar estos problemas sustituyendo los amortiguadores y las llantas, pero una vez que el carro volvió a circular, comenzaron otras fallas. Por supuesto, se remplazó la batería por otra que, a pesar de que está usada, servirá hasta que podamos ahorrar el dinero suficiente para adquirir una nueva.

The car was out of service for almost three months, the reason? The tires were very worn out and the shock absorbers were useless. This is part of the story, it was the one that, directly, drove my dad to do a complete mechanical overhaul of the front end. We were able to solve these problems by replacing the shocks and tires, but once the car was back on the road, other failures began. The battery began to discharge, followed by a kind of choking when my dad stepped on the accelerator; I describe this "failure" as I perceived it, although it was later learned that it had its origin in the spark plugs.The battery has reached its useful life; it was purchased four years ago, so it lasted much longer than originally projected. Every time my dad tells me that the parts of his car last for years, I laugh. It's just that, in a country like Venezuela, maintaining a car is quite complex. Por suerte, mi papá conoce su carro al pie de la letra, o sea, que muy pocas veces debe pagarle a un mecánico. En ocasiones, cuando el trabajo requiere de mano extra, mi hermano y yo lo ayudamos. Él aprovecha y nos enseña, aunque he de admitir que a veces se me dificulta aprender entre tantos cables y piezas mecánicas (ni siquiera conduzco, XD). Aun así, me gusta ayudarlo. Los automóviles son un arte completo, y siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender.
En este caso, mientras pasaba el alicate de presión, pude ver cómo mi papá le hacía mantenimiento al cuerpo de aceleración y revisaba las bujías. Intenté no preguntar nada, pues siento que como ayudante lo menos que puedo hacer es andar desconcentrándolo. Lo bueno es que él mismo me dice qué va en determinado lugar y para qué funciona. Al final de la jornada, y tal como él lo había supuesto, se deben cambiar las bujías por unas nuevas. El cuerpo de aceleración no tuvo problemas, al menos con esto se puede respirar con más tranquilidad.

Fortunately, my dad knows his car inside out, which means he rarely has to pay a mechanic. Sometimes, when the job requires extra hands, my brother and I help him. I tried not to ask any questions, because I feel that as a helper, the least I can do is to keep him off track. The good thing is that he tells me himself what goes where and what it works for. At the end of the day, and just as he had assumed, the spark plugs had to be changed for new ones. The throttle body had no problems, at least with this we could breathe easier.

Mi papá suele hacerle mantenimiento preventivo al su automóvil con frecuencia. Por supuesto, el Chevrolet corsa tiene la particularidad, al menos según lo que sé, de que sus piezas sean de buena calidad; de allí, quizás, que este falle muy poco. Ya proyectamos la compra de la batería nueva y las bujías; siempre que puedo, ayudo a mi papá a adquirir las piezas nuevas, pues en casa necesitamos mucho del carro para cumplir con nuestras labores, todavía más cuando el pasaje por transporte público es bastante costoso.
