Let me set the scene for you: it’s an overcast day at home, as wel as in Amsterdam, the kind of weather that makes you wonder if the sun got lost in a philosophical debate with the clouds. But none of that mattered because today was mission-critical. We were heading to Schiphol Airport, the epicenter of Dutch hustle and bustle, to pick up our youngest son, the adventurer, the cowboy-in-training, the guy who’s decided Montana is where his heart beats fastest.
The Drive to Glory
So there we are, cruising down the highway like the cast of a family heist movie. Only, instead of stealing diamonds, we were here to retrieve a gem. (Cheesy, I know, but hey, this is my blog.) The anticipation in the car was palpable. “What if he’s brought a cowboy hat?” someone mused. Spoiler: no cowboy hat, but plenty of stories.
Montana, The Love Story
Let’s get one thing straight: our boy had an epic time in Montana. It wasn’t just the vast landscapes, the crisp mountain air, or even the classic American diners (though he did rave about the milkshakes). Nope, the real headline was: he’s got a girlfriend there. Yes, folks, Montana is officially a state of both great scenery and budding romance. And if you’re wondering, yes, he’s already planning his next trip back. “She’s amazing,” he said. We missed him, but clearly, Montana gave him something (or someone) special.
Schiphol Shenanigans
Schiphol Airport is a place where dreams take off and jet lag lands. Walking through the terminal, we were greeted by Christmas lights and hurried travelers, creating a surreal mix of festivity and chaos. It’s like Santa’s workshop but with baggage trolleys instead of elves. I half-expected someone to yell, “Flight 303, last call!” every five minutes.
We got to the arrivals hall, and there he was, rolling his suitcase like a seasoned traveler who’d just conquered the wild west. Cue the hugs, the laughs, and a little mistiness (I’ll never admit if it was me). Honestly, it was one of those moments you wish you could freeze and frame.
The Aftermath
Now, here’s the kicker: the boy’s jet-lagged, but he’s already talking about returning to Montana. If I didn’t know better, I’d say Montana’s running some sort of secret program to convert Europeans into cowboys and cowgirls. And, you know what? I get it. The kid’s found something—or someone—that lights him up, and that’s worth celebrating.
We’re glad to have him back (for now). The house feels whole again, at least until the next Montana adventure calls. As we drove back home from Schiphol under the Amsterdam night sky, I couldn’t help but smile. Life, with all its twists, turns, and unexpected cowboy romances, is pretty damn beautiful.
