Farmers are beginning to clear the lands for the raining season coming up. The previous year was full of sad stories for people in the rural communities. Living was hard for the living. Money was not the issue, but what to eat. Especially, the family of Mr. Jonny, popularly known in Segi village as Baba Oloore ( A man that helps)
In his compound were menservants and maidens serving under him. His wives are more than ten asides concubines who took turns to visit Baba's house every night. His children are both far and near and across borders working and making ends meet.
It happened that year, Baba took a huge loan from the bank and invested it in crop farming alone. His hopes were high that it would yield great results during harvest.
Unfortunately, it started raining late. Around the end of the fifth month of the year. It rained in other villages and towns but in Segi and a few villages surrounded by them lacked water. Are the ancestors angry with us?, Are we not having rain this year?, what should we do now?, hunger is looming already, how do we cope next year if there's no harvest this season?. Said the villagers. Rumours, complains, anxiety kept flying about all over the villages.
One fateful day, Some little children gathered around in the market Square, they took leaves, wrapped it around their waist and held some in their hands as they paraded round the Segi village Singing. God bring us rain, "we are thirsty". They did this for three days. Just like a miracle, the clouds gathered, thickness and darkness of the sky got the people elated that's it was going to rain. On the night of the third day that the children cried out for water, it rained, and after that day, the next two months were sunny days. Not a single drop of rain.
Farmers lamented. Calamity befalls the land. All crops dried up on the farm. Baba Oloore lost all his investment to the harsh weather. Debtors and creditors to fought, servants left their masters because of no payment, wives deserted home due to hunger and everything turned upside down in Segi village.
As a result of this Baba Oloore gave up everything and committed suicide. He was found dead on a tree in his farm. He ended his own life.
However, another wonder happened!. A few weeks after Mr. Johnny died, it rained in Segi. It rained continuously that farmers started replanting crops again. God has blessed us abundantly. Said the people of Segi, although the death of Baba Oloore mixed up with the joy they should portray.
This new year was an answered prayer. Spring began the third month and it rained everywhere.
It was a Spring surprise after all the past struggles!.
