A few days ago marked the twentieth anniversary of one of the most horrific terrorist attacks organized by jihadists on European soil. It claimed the lives of 192 people. The 11M attacks on four trains in Madrid.
Hace unos días se cumplió el vigésimo aniversario de uno de los atentados terroristas más horribles organizados por yihadistas en suelo europeo. Se cobraron la vida de 192 personas. Los atentados del 11M en cuatro trenes de Madrid.
Disney premiered this miniseries created by Jorge and Alberto Sánchez Cabezudo. I remember both filmmakers for having been behind Crematorio, the series adapted from the novel by Rafael Chirbes, which was a production that marked a before and after. I have said it on previous occasions. With Crematorio, Spanish fiction took a great leap in quality and I included it in my top of my best series of all time.
Once again they are in charge of adapting a literary work. This time the book by journalist and writer Manuel Jabois. The writer did a research work, documented the whole process of the macro trial and interviewed Gabriel Montoya Vidal, whose character is the main protagonist.
It should be noted that the story is narrated by this character. The one known as El Baby and also nicknamed El Gitanillo. It is not the story of the terrorist group that carried out the attack. It is the story of a gang of common criminals who got involved with Muslims who, behind their facade of drug dealers, was a cell that had been planning a terrible attack for years.

A ambos cineastas los recuerdo por haber estado detrás de Crematorio, la serie adaptación de la novela de Rafael Chirbes, que fue una producción que marcó un antes y un después. Lo he dicho en anteriores ocasiones. Con Crematorio, la ficción española dio un gran salto de calidad y la incluí en mi top de mis mejores series de todos los tiempos.
Una vez más son ellos los encargados de adaptar una obra literaria. Esta vez el libro del periodista y escritor Manuel Jabois. El escritor realizó un trabajo de investigación, documentó todo el proceso del macrojuicio y entrevistó a Gabriel Montoya Vidal, cuyo personaje es el principal protagonista.
Cabe destacar que la historia es narrada por este personaje. El conocido como El Baby y también apodado El Gitanillo. No es la historia del grupo terrorista que realizó el atentado. Es la historia de una banda de delincuentes comunes que se involucraron con musulmanes que tras su fachada de narcotraficantes, era una célula que llevaba años planeando un terrible atentado.
Do not think that they are trying to whitewash the image of criminals. Not at all. That's why I quite liked the miniseries. Terrorist acts are things I abhor. Taking the lives of innocents for religious or political ideologies is so despicable. Disgusting. That's where I wish there was the death penalty everywhere, to exterminate these monsters who think they have a divine right to kill and instill terror.
From the very first episode we are shown the adverse social situation in which El Baby grew up. But just as he has never regretted what he did, that is made very clear. As it says in the story and can be seen in the trailer. Of course we will see his family background. Father. Mother. Sisters. At the end of the day, he is also a human being like everyone else, he just made bad decisions and was part, knowingly or not, of an abominable crime.
Don't worry, we won't feel empathy for that character. It's impossible. Besides, that's not the creators' intention either. They show the facts, as explained by that character, making him an unreliable narrator. There is a certain coldness in his way of telling the story. A delinquent who expects nothing from life, only to enjoy the moment.
Another point in favor of the miniseries is the respect with which the part of the attack is approached. Respect for the victims, both those who left and their families, whose lives were marked and shattered. They will never get over this loss and the production does not want to feed the morbidity. Respect for the victims is appreciated.
No piensen que pretenden blanquear la imagen de los delincuentes. En absoluto. Por eso me gustó bastante la miniserie. Los actos terroristas son cosas que aborrezco. Quitar la vida a inocentes por ideologías religiosas o políticas es tan despreciable. Repugnante. Ahí es donde me gustaría que existiera la pena de muerte en todas partes, para exterminar a estos monstruos que se creen con el derecho divino de matar e infundir terror.
Desde el primer episodio se nos muestra la adversa situación social en la que creció El Baby. Pero al igual que nunca se ha arrepentido de lo que hizo, eso queda bien claro. Como dice en la historia y se puede ver en el trailer. Por supuesto veremos su entorno familiar. Padre. Madre. Hermanas. Al fin y al cabo, también es un ser humano como todos, sólo que tomó malas decisiones y formó parte, sabiéndolo o no, de un crimen abominable.
No te preocupes, no sentiremos empatía por ese personaje. Es imposible. Además, esa tampoco es la intención de los creadores. Muestran los hechos, tal y como los explica ese personaje, convirtiéndolo en un narrador poco fiable. Hay cierta frialdad en su forma de contar la historia. Un delincuente que no espera nada de la vida, sólo disfrutar del momento.
Otro punto a favor de la miniserie es el respeto con que se aborda la parte del atentado. Respeto por las víctimas, tanto de los que se fueron y las de sus familias, cuyas vidas quedaron marcadas y destrozadas. Nunca superarán esta pérdida y la producción no quiere alimentar el morbo. Se agradece el respeto a las víctimas.
I understand that for family members, friends and people who lived through those attacks, having movies or series made about it can affect them. Cause them another shock of pain. But at the same time this kind of productions are necessary. To tell the facts. To leave a record for future generations. To be part of the memory of history, not only of a country, but of the whole world. Because the plague of terrorism can strike anywhere. Its mission is to spread terror, regardless of borders and nationalities.
A superb cast provides the necessary realism. The three actors playing El Baby. The child, the adolescent and the adult. Of course, those in the adolescent and adult stages are the ones who stand out the most in terms of screen time. Roberto Gutiérrez and Quim Ávila Conde. That criminal look that puts anyone on alert. They convey the feeling that they don't care about anything. For Gutiérrez it is his first experience as an actor and I hope to see him in other roles in the future, this is his great entry into the world of acting.
It's the actor Pol Lopez who eats up the screen with those bulging eyes that convey madness and is worth a shit everything. I'm sure he'll be nominated for an award next year for his interpretation of Emilio Trashorras. What a trick of fate, to cross the paths of this deranged man with the terrorists. The real Emilio is back in the news, calling for the euthanasia law and protesting the lack of medical attention he needs.
His characters are two monsters, the kind that are really scary, because they are the kind of destroyers that walk quietly among us.

Entiendo que para los familiares, amigos y personas que vivieron esos atentados, que se hagan películas o series sobre ello puede afectarles. Causarles otro choque de dolor. Pero al mismo tiempo este tipo de producciones son necesarias. Para contar los hechos. Para dejar constancia a las generaciones futuras. Formar parte de la memoria de la historia, no sólo de un país, sino del mundo entero. Porque la plaga del terrorismo puede golpear en cualquier parte. Su misión es sembrar el terror, sin importar fronteras ni nacionalidades.
Un reparto soberbio aporta el realismo necesario. Los tres actores que interpretan a El Baby. El niño, el adolescente y el adulto. Por supuesto, los de las etapas adolescente y adulta son los que más destacan en cuanto a tiempo en pantalla. Roberto Gutiérrez y Quim Ávila Conde. Esa mirada criminal que pone alerta a cualquiera. Transmiten la sensación de que todo les da igual. Para Gutiérrez es su primera experiencia como actor y espero verle en otros papeles en el futuro, esta es su gran entrada en el mundo de la interpretación.
Es el actor Pol López el que se come la pantalla con esos ojos saltones que transmiten locura y que vale una mierda todo. Seguro que el año que viene le nominan a un premio por su interpretación de Emilio Trashorras. Vaya jugarreta del destino, cruzar los caminos de este trastornado con los terroristas. El verdadero Emilio ha vuelto a ser noticia, pidiendo la ley de eutanasia y protestando por la falta de atención médica que necesita.
Sus personajes son dos monstruos, de esos que dan miedo de verdad, porque son la clase de destructores que caminan tranquilamente entre nosotros.
