Greetings Readers
It has been quite refreshing to work with Fell Dragon Kay as a person again. There will be so much more told from her perspective. Hang on, it's gonna get interesting!
She felt a hand squeeze her shoulder. The queen hadn’t given up.
“Calm down. I know you’re panicked but take a deep breath. If you had just been given a new body, what would you do?”
“I don’t know.”
“Eat or test it out. Find her, I’ll deal with the chuckleheads.” The queen pointed down a corridor. “Three doors down, there will be a spiral staircase, take it down, then follow your nose. If she’s not in the kitchen, then she’s in the garden.”
The queen released her and closed the doors to the room behind her. Saita didn’t waste a second. She ran to where the kitchen was. There was nothing there, but it looked like a whirlwind had torn through it. A door to the outside had been smashed open. Saita was painfully aware of how quickly Kay was gaining control of her new body. She needed to stop her and force her back to where she was meant to be.
Stepping out from the ruined door led her to a courtyard. Seeing nothing in the vicinity, Saita scoured the grounds to find any trace of the Fell Dragon. She soon found herself in the garden, allowing her panic to take control of her. That was until something hit her head softly.
She spun around and she found the Fell Dragon lounging in the low-hanging boughs of a tree.
“Did you forget that you can sense life force?” mocked the Dragon.
“What are you doing!” demanded Saita, her voice shrill with panic.
“Eating.”
Kay threw another apple core at Saita, who dodged it this time.
“What were you thinking?”
“This isn’t my fault.” The Dragon sat up and looked down at her. “I’m just as shocked as you are.”
“Just stop this and come back.”
“How?” mocked the Dragon as she looked at Saita with amusement.
Saita felt the tears threatening. This was all too much. She had thought she had dealt with all the fear surrounding the Fell Dragon but now that she was standing before her in the flesh, the unresolved issues came flooding back.
Kay snorted and crunched into another apple. It had been her fourth one in a matter of minutes. She was starving. Different from the starvation she had in the past, food made a considerable dent in the feeling.
Lucky for this universe.
She gripped the limb above her and closed her eyes. She could sense the life slowly spreading through the xylem and phloem of the tree. She wondered if she could draw upon it. It didn’t take much concentration, the life force of the tree slowly started to fill her. She hissed as it did, as it felt like her entire arm was being sliced open by thousands of razor blades.
“What are you doing?” demanded Saita.
Kay opened her eye and notice the leaves that were attached to the limb had shrivelled and died. She released the limb with a grin. Her abilities were intact but still, she wondered if this body was real.
Kay bit down on the webbing between her thumb and forefinger, hard enough to trigger pain and blood. This shocked Saita who simply shouted.
“It’s a real body. You will bleed and you can die.”
“Nope, I can’t die, not unless you do.” Said Kay as she looked at her bleeding hand as if nothing had happened.
Saita didn’t know what to do. She hated that her mind wasn’t able to come up with a suitable answer. She didn’t need to panic. There was no need for it. All she needed to do was take a deep breath.
“You know, Bolx was right, I did a number on your psyche.”
Panic was replaced with fury as Saita remembered what they had been fighting about earlier. She looked up at Kay inspecting her bleeding hand, almost as if confused that it was injured. She recalled what Jethron had said about periods of catatonia, and anger boiled up inside of her. What had Kay done during those times?
“Oh, calm down, it’s not as if I impersonated you. Bolx knew you too well.” Kay wiped the blood on her shirt, uncaring that it left a stain. “I did nothing to stain your honour or take what was yours. Duran and Bolx knew all along.”
“They said nothing!”
“For good reason.” Kay swung her legs down and tried to pelt Saita with the half-eaten apple. “You’re one step away from a nervous breakdown as I speak to you now. What do you think would have happened if you found all this out when you were pregnant or trying to build allegiances? Not well, I would think.”
Saita caught the apple and in a smooth motion returned it back in a powerful pitch. Kay, caught off guard, took the fruit to the face, pitching over backwards, and came crashing to the ground. Air exploded from her lungs and pain radiated throughout her body.
“I deserved that.” She muttered as she sat up and rubbed her head, smearing it with blood.
She grimaced and got to her feet, grateful that the branch she had climbed to wasn’t too high. The fall had been painful, reminding her that despite her being immortal alongside Saita, she could still feel pain.
“I had my fun. Let’s end this.” Said Kay after some time. “I don’t think I like watching you break down.”
She stretched with a groan and made her way back to the castle with Saita trailing behind her.
“Was nice to feel the sun on my skin again. It has been too long.” Said Kay as they entered the castle and started picking their way through the mess left in the kitchen. “The apples were good. It’s been a long time since I felt sated by food."
“What did you do?” demanded Saita suddenly.
Kay had been bound to Saita long enough to know what she meant. She shrugged her shoulders and said, “I existed as Duran and Bolx sat watching. Ever wonder why your husband had a bite scar on his right forearm that wasn’t Wolven? That was yours truly. Honestly, he scared me that day. No one knew what was going on, and well, I’m not used to feeling scared.”
Saita knew the mark she was referring to, but Bolx had always downplayed it, not drawing attention to the wound as it healed. Saita had thought that he had gotten in a brawl with someone and didn’t want to admit to it as he was trying to be a good king-consort.
“How many times?” she demanded as they started climbing the stairs.
“I don’t remember. It’s inconsequential.”
“Not to me!”
Kay rolled her eyes, “What does it matter; it’s in your past. Bolx is long dead. Doran is long dead.”
“It matters to me!”
Kay gave an exasperated sigh and turned to her, fixing her with a single blue eye. “It doesn’t matter. Nothing ever happened. I came out, had a nice chat with Doran and Bolx, and then went back to sleep. Happened maybe once or twice a year. Never lasted more than a few days.”
“But why?”
“You’re the one that kicked me from my hiding space. Only you can answer that.”
“But I…”
But Kay was no longer listening, rather skipping up the stairs two at a time. Saita followed with her mind blank. If what Kay said was true, she was the one that forced her into situations that were clearly terrifying. As Kay got to the top of the stairs Saita blurted.
“I’m sorry.”
Kay stopped and looked at her in confusion, “For what?”
“I don’t know. Everything. Nothing. Getting us stuck here.”
Kay dismissed her with a wave, “You’re young, you’ll learn.”
“I’m almost 250 years old!”
“And I’m close to 5,000.” Kay took off again. “Though I may be a few hundred off somewhere.”
This is going to be an interesting relationship!
