El Proyecto “Corazón Canino” surge a partir de la aprobación de la ley de bienestar animal en 2021, con el objetivo de garantizar el bienestar de los animales en el campus de la Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, en Cuba. Antes de su creación, la población canina en la universidad mostraba un estado de salud decadente, por lo que una de las tareas del proyecto es crear conciencia en la comunidad universitaria sobre el cuidado y protección de los animales.
Hasta el momento, se ha logrado desparasitar a un gran número de perros comunitarios, aunque esta tarea es complicada debido a que algunos no son tan sociables como otros. Se le ha administrado la vacuna antirrábica a un total de 15 perros, un número bastante pequeño en comparación con la cantidad de perros que se encuentran en los terrenos de la universidad, pero dependemos de otras instituciones para este tipo de servicios.
En los últimos dos años, se han esterilizado un total de 30 perros, entre hembras y machos. La esterilización es un proceso que contribuye al bienestar general de la población canina y a una convivencia armoniosa entre humanos y mascotas. Además, se ha tratado a más de 6 perros con tumor venéreo transmisible, una enfermedad mortal que requiere un tratamiento costoso. Los fondos para el proyecto se obtienen a través de donaciones y pequeños sorteos realizados en fechas festivas para recaudar dinero y así poder realizar esterilizaciones, comprar medicamentos y cubrir los gastos del transporte hasta los veterinarios.

Hasta la fecha se han dado en adopción más de 35 animales entre perros y gatos ya sean adultos o pequeños, siempre bajo el compromiso responsable del adoptante y se realiza un seguimiento para comprobar el bienestar de nuestros peluditos.
Sin embargo, no todo es color de rosa. La universidad es un punto de abandono animal, muchos ciudadanos de la zona externa los dejan abandonados en la entrada como si de basura se tratara. La comida disponible resulta insuficiente para la cantidad de perros callejeros que hay, y contamos con muy pocos voluntarios con iniciativa para ayudar en emergencias. Aun así, hemos tenido la oportunidad de conocer a veterinarios que se unen a la causa ofreciendo precios más razonables, y hemos logrado mejorar en gran medida la vida de los animales comunitarios en los terrenos de la universidad.

The “Canine Heart” Project arises from the approval of the animal welfare law in 2021, with the objective of guaranteeing the well-being of animals on the campus of the University of Informatics Sciences, in Cuba. Before its creation, the canine population at the university showed a declining state of health, so one of the tasks of the project is to raise awareness in the university community about the care and protection of animals.
So far, a large number of community dogs have been dewormed, although this task is complicated because some are not as sociable as others. A total of 15 dogs have been administered rabies vaccinations, a fairly small number compared to the number of dogs on university grounds, but we rely on other institutions for these types of services.
In the last two years, a total of 30 dogs, both females and males, have been sterilized. Sterilization is a process that contributes to the general well-being of the canine population and a harmonious coexistence between humans and pets. Additionally, more than 6 dogs have been treated with transmissible venereal tumor, a fatal disease that requires expensive treatment. Funds for the project are obtained through donations and small raffles held on festive dates to raise money to be able to carry out sterilizations, buy medicines and cover transportation costs to the veterinarians.

To date, more than 35 animals have been adopted, including dogs and cats, whether adults or small, always under the responsible commitment of the adopter and monitoring is carried out to check the well-being of our furry animals.
However, not everything is rosy. The university is a point of animal abandonment, many citizens of the external area leave them abandoned at the entrance as if they were garbage. The food available is insufficient for the number of stray dogs there are, and we have very few volunteers with initiative to help in emergencies. Still, we have had the opportunity to meet veterinarians who are joining the cause by offering more reasonable prices, and we have managed to greatly improve the lives of community animals on university grounds.
