I acted accordingly by relieving myself of my long weekday activities by spending my weekend in a rural area – somewhere situated at Esit Eket local government area, Akwa Ibom state. Within the heart of Esit Eket local government area, there lies a prominent village known as Ndon Edim village in the Uquo clan that is surrounded by a sightseeing stream, “Idim Ekpene Uquo.” The stream is one of the places people often love to visit when they come to this village, because of its beautiful nature.
As I arrived at the place, I was well received by the residents; immediately, I began to tour around and behold the simplicity and beauty of the surroundings. Predominantly, the settlers are known for their agricultural activities because the stream supplies water to plants growing within the vicinity, sea animals like prawns and catfish are often seen in the stream offering the settlers a fishing profession too. I got to know that seafood is less expensive in this area because they are organic producers of the product.
What got my attention in the stream of Idim Ekpene Uquo was its water quality, particularly during rainy seasons. The residents told me the water body is very clean, and it is their source of drinking, washing, and all other uses - unlike many water bodies that suffer from pollution and contamination, this stream remains remarkably clean and clear. It is not uncommon to see locals gathering at the banks to fill their containers with fresh, pure water, knowing that it is safe for consumption.
For me, the weekend spent at Idim Ekpene Uquo was a beautiful experience. Unlike the hustle and bustle of life in the urban areas, I found solace in the simplicity of rural living. From the moment of watching the sunrise over the waters to the period of seeing freshly caught catfish at a local eatery, every moment spent was an indication of the beauty of nature and the serenity of the community.
Finally, the weekend excursion to Idim Ekpene Uquo provided a refreshing break from the routines of urban life. The community, situated in natural beauty and supported by the fresh waters of its stream, offers glimpses into the simplicity and serenity of rural life. The encounter served as a reminder of the necessity of protecting and cherishing such natural surroundings. Every visitor leaves with not just memories of peaceful surroundings and kind hospitality, but also a renewed respect for the balance between humans and the environment seen in locations like Idim Ekpene Uquo.
