Arthur: The end of the contract...

Nearing his 90th birthday Arthur an army veteran contemplates from his window the large garden that surrounded the nursing home, every now and then his eyes turned upwards to see the beautiful blue sky that illuminated his face, bringing a little smile to his face.

Accompanied by the loneliness of family abandonment, he waited anxiously in the mid-morning for the sight of Joseph, his caregiver, it was the only time of the day he had to chat a little with someone younger than him. That way he would find out what was going on in the world.

    • As my boss Arthur woke up, I brought you some coffee. It's a nice day today
    • Joseph was waiting for you, I think the end of my contract is near.... today I have been remembering so many things I thought I had already forgotten, it is a prelude....
    • You are speaking Arthur, your contract here at the residence is for life, which end of contract are you referring to.
    • That is precisely what I am referring to, my dear young friend, to the contract of life, the one we sign at birth and celebrate it by crying at the top of our lungs. That is where our contract begins, with its obligations and its rewards, its joys and its sorrows. Everything in our life is a contract, you must do something to receive something.
    • You are going to start philosophizing, tell me more,” said the young caregiver, sitting on the bed to listen attentively to his old friend.
    • Look, going to school, college and university is a contract, perhaps the most important contract of our lives is marriage, besides agreeing for love we have to sign it before the law. Every contract comes to an end, at that moment we have to evaluate if we did it right, if we left good teachings, if our legacy will last in time young friend and that is what I have been doing this morning. I have been giving an account to the creator for my wonderful 90 year life contract.
    • Stop talking nonsense, you have a lot to live for.....

And so the day passed, two great friends talking, the old man telling his anecdotes and the young man amazed to learn...

The next morning when Joseph started his shift and went to his friend's room, to his surprise it was empty, for Arthur the end of the contract had come.
