They warned us not to go during rain. However, it was completely dry in Playa del Carmen, but here it had been raining for days. We didn't care. Still great to be there.

Despite the cloudy and rainy weather, we still managed to have a wonderful afternoon at the beautiful beaches of Holbox.

Not 100% sure, but I believe the big white bird is a heron. Or a crane. As I said: not quite sure...Beautiful either way.
The roads in Holbox all look like this after some rain. The 'streets' are sandy roads, so the water isn't going anywhere any time soon. Those with boots were the smartest people. We won't forget them next time!
Even though the weather wasn't the best, the sun sets were still stunning. I could easily stay here forever!
Before and after our visit to Rosarito for Hivefest, I had been so busy that I felt like I had been neglecting the kids a little.
For months, we didn't even see the beach from up close, even though we live only a 20 minute walk from it.
So when one of the booking websites had some amazing offers for accommodations, I decided it was time to take some time off and spend a few days in another piece of paradise.
There were a few choices, but after going through all of them and weighing up the pros and cons of all of those places (some places are not easy to get around in without a car, others needed longer travel, etc.) we decided on Isla Holbox.
Isla Holbox - The Not-so-touristy Hippie Island
The island of Holbox can be reached from Playa del Carmen by taking a 2.5 hour bus ride (or car ride) to Chiquila, and then the ferry (30 minutes) from there.
It's a minor sacrifice, because this island is truly magical.
The tourists haven't quite discovered this island yet. Sure, there are tourists, but nothing like in Tulum, Cozumel or even Isla Mujeres.
The roads are sand. It's almost like they just built around the beach, which is basically what it is.
I was warned not to go during rain or right after, but since I booked a few weeks in advance, we had no say in it.
When we arrived, it had been raining for days (while it was bright and sunny where we live) and all the roads were flooded.
I guess water will always reclaim the island. At least partly.
It didn't matter to us. The temperature was still nice, and the rain made it feeling fresh, cool even.
Something that was a nice change from the always 30 degree and sticky climate of Playa del Carmen.
Our first Day
We arrived in the afternoon, right on time to check into our hotel. Hotel Mayari is at a little distance of the center, but nothing that couldn't be overcome. It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the nearest convenience store, and 20 minutes to get to the beach.
The place was simple but had everything we needed. It was perfect for us.
After we all took a shower and got changed, we took a stroll through town, trying to find a reasonably cheap place to eat.
We found a little taco place, and this suited us just fine. We even made it to the beach that day, but we would save the beach exploration for the next day.
Even though the trip wasn't long, any kind of travel still gets us tired, so it was an early night for us.
