I thought this tree was quite unusual, add the colorful island and dramatic clouds and you've got yourself an interesting photo on so many levels.

I had some free time near Burlington, Vermont today, so I decided to take a scenic walk along the Island Line Trail. This trail offers a serene and stunning outdoor experience, especially as autumn brings a vivid display of fall colors. This scenic trail stretches from downtown Burlington, along the beautiful Lake Champlain shoreline, and over to South Hero Island via a historic railway causeway. Today, the crisp air and gentle breeze off the lake made it a perfect time to explore the trail, with the brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows of fall foliage still visible along the shoreline. Along the way, I was lucky enough to spot a pileated woodpecker, common mergansers, and lots of migrating ducks.

One of the highlights of the Island Line Trail is the Colchester Causeway, a three-mile stretch that takes you directly over Lake Champlain. Walking or biking along the causeway feels almost surreal, as if you’re crossing the water with panoramic views of the Green Mountains in Vermont and the Adirondacks in New York on either side. The causeway includes a gap known as "The Cut," where a seasonal bike ferry transports pedestrians and cyclists during the warmer months, though fall is quieter with fewer crowds, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful experience. Today I felt like I had the entire causeway to myself, except for a couple of bikers and bird watchers.

Reaching South Hero Island offers even more picturesque views, with farmland, orchards, and vineyards spread across the island. You might pass charming spots like apple orchards offering fresh cider or local farm stands with fall produce. I didn't make it all the way across to South Hero, as my time was limited, but it is a future mission for me and the family! The Island Line Trail combines Vermont’s natural beauty, rural landscapes, and lake views, creating an unforgettable day of exploration and scenery along Lake Champlain.

Even without the sun, the dramatic skies made the mallets bay breakwall trail pretty alluring and photogenic today.

Looking back where I came from. I've got a long way to go.

It is the very end of fall, but there can still be a splash of color around if you know where to look.

I think this path was made with biking in mind....

The path takes you right past this house. The last one before heading out on the causeway.

    As always, keep traveling!
