Deporte y arte urbano (Esp/Ing)

No dejo de sorprenderme cuando en el lugar menos pensado puedo contemplar arte, lienzos dispuestos en cualquier parte que exponen pinturas cuyos referentes son deportistas. Algunos de estos murales sirven para observar el arte en su esencia, pero también ofrecen información y rinden homenaje a determinados atletas y sus disciplinas.

I never cease to be surprised when in the least expected place I can contemplate art, canvases arranged anywhere that expose paintings whose referents are athletes. Some of these murals serve to observe art in its essence, but they also offer information and pay tribute to certain athletes and their disciplines.

Cierta tarde, paseando por Cumaná, me percaté de unas pinturas que decoraban un edificio en la comunidad de Las Palomas. Un beisbolista y un futbolista aparecían allí en plena acción, el primero con el uniforme de los Dodgers de Los Ángeles y el segundo con el de La Vinotinto, el cual es distinto o de la selección nacional.

One afternoon, walking through Cumaná, I noticed some paintings decorating a building in the community of Las Palomas. A baseball player and a soccer player appeared there in action, the former with the Los Angeles Dodgers uniform and the latter with the uniform of La Vinotinto, which is different from that of the national team.

Al percatarme de los nombres que aparecen en el mural, tuve problemas para relacionarlos con las imágenes referenciales porque no recordaba un pitcher zurdo de los Dodgers con ese nombre ni tampoco el del futbolista.

When I noticed the names on the mural, I had trouble relating them to the reference images because I didn't remember a left-handed Dodger pitcher by that name or the soccer player's name.

Indagando, me enteré que los nombres corresponden a dos deportistas cumaneses nacidos en la comunidad. Edgardo Henríquez Vásquez fue un pitcher firmado por los Dodgers, pero que no pudo pasar de categoría A, en tanto Luis Castillo Patiño es un futbolista que juega con Héroes de Falcón en la segunda división del torneo local. A través del arte quedaron para la posteridad como imágenes que representaron el anhelo de los residentes de la zona.

Upon inquiring, I found out that the names correspond to two Cuman sportsmen born in the community. Edgardo Henríquez Vásquez was a pitcher signed by the Dodgers, but could not make it past category A, while Luis Castillo Patiño is a soccer player who plays with Héroes de Falcón in the second division of the local tournament. Through art they remained for posterity as images that represented the longing of the residents of the area.

Me pareció muy interesante esta propuesta por lo distinto y atrevido, puesto que los artistas se inclinaron por lo que ha podido ser, en lugar de rendir tributo a deportistas consagrados como el recientemente fallecido Francisco "Morochito" Rodríguez, quien hacía vida en el sector.

I found this proposal very interesting because it was different and daring, since the artists were inclined towards what could have been, instead of paying tribute to consecrated sportsmen such as the recently deceased Francisco "Morochito" Rodríguez, who lived in the sector.

También cuando me regresaba a mi casa, caminando por el Parque Ayacucho, me detuve a contemplar un gran mural dedicado a Leonel Messi, que en este caso no pateaba un balón de fútbol sino que tenía un helado en su mano. El astro argentino, una leyenda viviente del deporte, estaba allí con su camiseta albiceleste pintado a lo grande, como invitando a los niños y jóvenes que le idolatran a pedir una gran barquilla para que sean como él.

Also when I was returning home, walking through Ayacucho Park, I stopped to contemplate a large mural dedicated to Leonel Messi, who in this case was not kicking a soccer ball but had an ice cream in his hand. The Argentine star, a living legend of the sport, was there with his albiceleste jersey painted big, as if inviting children and young people who idolize him to ask for a big basket to be like him.
