Hunting Down A Memory

Where I live, we call it Fake Spring for this time of year. The weather can change in a matter of fifteen minutes to an hour. So, while the weather forecast didn't call for anything but cold temperatures and clouds, the weather decided to mock our forecasters once more.

After church, we were met with a rapid snowfall. We hurried home for lunch and got the kids to bed. It didn't take long for a layer of snow to start settling in on everything.

There was nothing to do outside, so I started thinking of something to do. That's when the conversation I had last night came back to me. My sister and brother-in-law flew in yesterday from Oklahoma. We haven't seen them in a couple of years, so I took the whole week off of work to spend time with them. Last night's conversation turned to some reminiscing about an old video me and a couple of my cousins made during summer break in high school. We called it Toast Wars.

My sister commented how she hadn't been able to find it on YouTube. Sure enough, because it's a spoof on Star Wars, they blocked it in the US due to copyright laws. Then, I remembered my cousin gave me a copy of it and put it on this flash drive. To understand why I'd bother to go to such trouble, I'll give you a synopsis of the movie.

    Synopsis of Toast Wars
This movie jokingly parodies the trilogy of A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi.

Princess Leia is hungry and wants toast. The Empire intercepts her message and sets out on a mission to disrupt her quest to get toast, with the sole goal of annoying her. Luke Piewalker trains to become the last Jedi who can stop Dark Vapor and the Emperor once and for all.

Hilarity ensues as we used Lego recreations of well-known Star Wars ships, combined with Fourth of July fireworks, to simulate "space" battles and explosions. Pardon the blurry screenshots, but video technology back then was not what it is now.

We even did a parody of the Imperial "walker" and turned it into an Imperial "roller" assaulting the Rebel Alliance toaster, with turkey basters full of water for "cannons."

To add to the absurdity, the Emperor and Dark Vapor are having a staring contest in his bathroom while all of this is taking place.

The final scenes culminate in a showdown between Luke Piewalker and Dark Vapor, including a small skirmish in the kitchen and Dark Vapor throwing cheese in Luke's face.

The whole time Luke and Dark Vapor are battling, the Emperor is sitting in his living room, casually enjoying some cheese and crackers.

The battle concludes as Dark Vapor proves to be too much for Luke Piewalker to handle, as Luke loses his arm.

The Emperor gives him an ultimatum to join them or die. Shockingly, Luke accepts with little hesitation. The video concludes with the Emperor, Dark Vapor and now-Dark Piewalker doing a jig in the Emperor's kitchen, with the "Imperial March" playing in the background.

    A Summer of Memories Found
After about seven or eight minutes of searching, I finally found the flash drive.

I plugged it into my wife's laptop, and it loaded up without issue. I uploaded it to Google Drive and sent a link to my sister, brother-in-law and one of my other cousins who was at dinner last night. Toast Wars has been a family favorite across multiple generations. My secret hope is that one day my kids or another generation does their own parody and has as much fun as I did. It'll be one of the most memorable times in my life that I will cherish forever.

As I finish typing this, the snow is starting to melt but it's still cold and everyone else in the house is still asleep. I can't think of a better opportunity to go watch Toast Wars. When my kids wake up, I look forward to sharing this memory with them.

Have a great weekend, and hopefully you have a chance to make some great memories of your own!
