Anyone who has ever travelled to New York City, London or San Francisco will have at least heard of the Chinese districts in these metropolises or perhaps even visited them. But did you know that Mexico City also has a Chinatown and that there are even multi-storey Chinese shopping malls in Mexico's capital? If not, this post might be interesting for you, because today I'm going to show you the Chinese side of CDMX.
Jeder, der schon einmal nach New York City, London oder San Francisco gereist ist, wird zumindest schon einmal von den chinesischen Stadtvierteln in diesen Metropolen gehört haben oder sie vielleicht sogar besucht haben. Aber wusstet ihr, dass auch Mexico City über ein Chinatown verfügt und dass es sogar mehrstöckige chinesische Einkaufszentren in Mexikos Hauptstadt gibt? Wenn nicht, könnte dieser Beitrag interessant für euch sein, denn heute zeige ich euch die chinesische Seite von CDMX.
Before I show you the Barrio Chino itself, I would like to introduce you to another place that is also located in the historic centre of Mexico City. I'm talking about the Pino Suárez market, which can be found near the metro station of the same name. This market mainly sells shoes and fashion at incredibly low prices. The goods are mainly Chinese imports. If you're looking for "original" Adidas or Nike sneakers for the equivalent of €15, you've come to the right place ;-) There are also a few culinary offers, but if you really want to experience China vibes, you have to go a few steps further.
Bevor ich euch das Barrio Chino selbst zeige, möchte ich euch einen anderen Ort vorstellen, der sich ebenfalls im historischen Zentrum von Mexiko-Stadt befindet. Ich spreche vom Pino Suárez Markt, den man in der Nähe der gleichnamigen Metro-Station findet. Dieser Markt bietet hauptsächlich Schuhe und Mode zu unglaublich günstigen Preisen. Es handelt sich bei den Waren hauptsächlich um chinesische Importe. Wenn ihr "Original" Adidas oder Nike Sneakers für umgerechnet 15€ sucht, seid ihr hier genau richtig ;-) Es gibt auch ein paar kulinarische Angebote, wer jedoch wirkliches China-Feeling erleben möchte, muss noch ein paar Schritte weiter gehen.
Directly located next to the Pino Suárez market you will find one of three huge Chinese shopping malls in the centre of Mexico City. These are called "Plaza Izazaga" and can be recognised by the Chinese characters on the outside. Inside you can find lots of small shops with everything you can imagine. I can't tell you how many floors full of Chinese goods you can find here. But there are at least five. If you like ordering from Wish or Temu, you'll find a real paradise of extremely cheap items of all kinds here. Chinese is also spoken a lot here and you can tell the shop owners are from China. Only the prices in pesos remind you that you are in Latin America.
Direkt angrenzend an den Pino Suárez Markt findet man eines von drei riesigen chinesischen Kaufhäusern im Zentrum von Mexico City. Diese werden als "Plaza Izazaga" bezeichnet und man erkennt sie unter anderem auch an den chinesischen Schriftzeichen von außen. Im inneren findet man jede Menge kleiner Läden mit allem, was man sich nur vorstellen kann. Ich kann euch gar nicht sagen, wie viele Stockwerke voller China-Ware man hier findet. Es sind aber zumindest fünf. Wer gerne bei Wish oder Temu bestellt, findet hier ein wahres Paradies an extrem günstigen Artikeln aller Art. Und hier wird auch viel chinesisch gesprochen und man sieht den Ladenbesitzern ihre Herkunft an. Nur die Preise in Pesos erinnern daran, dass man sich in Lateinamerika befindet.
But now I'll show you the actual Chinatown, which is located just a few minutes' walk from the Palacio de Bellas Artes and actually only consists of a single street that runs through two blocks. But the neighbourhood is still worth a visit because it is really beautifully decorated in typical Chinese style. You can tell this by the many red lanterns. Barrio Chino is also interesting from a culinary point of view. In addition to lots of street food, there are a number of Chinese restaurants. We chose one and were very happy with the food.
Nun zeige ich aber das eigentliche Chinatown, das sich nur wenige Gehminuten vom Palacio de Bellas Artes befindet und eigentlich nur aus einer einzigen Straße, die durch zwei Häuserblocks führt, besteht. Doch einen Besuch ist das Viertel trotzdem wert, denn es ist wirklich wunderschön, typisch chinesisch dekoriert. Das erkennt man schon an den vielen roten Laternen. Interessant ist das Barrio Chino auch was den kulinarischen Aspekt angeht. Neben viel Street Food findet man auch eine Reihe an chinesischen Restaurants. Wir suchten uns eines aus und waren mit dem Essen sehr zufrieden.
As you can see, the neighbourhood was very busy and that's no wonder, because you probably won't find anything like it anywhere else in Mexico. The proximity to many sights also ensured that Barrio Chino has developed into a tourist hotspot. I can only recommend that you get to know the Chinese side of CDMX.
Wie ihr sehen könnt, war das Viertel sehr gut besucht und das ist kein Wunder, denn etwas ähnliches findet man wahrscheinlich nirgendwo anders in Mexiko. Die Nähe zu vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten sorgt außerdem dafür, dass sich das Barrio Chino zu einem Touristen-Hotspot entwickelt hat. Ich kann euch wirklich nur empfehlen, die chinesische Seite von CDMX einmal kennenzulernen.
