Jamison Ross is an American vocalist and drummer of gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues and soul, and composer, winner of the 25th annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2012 for his drumming, impressing the jury with his skillful timing skills, fluid brush technique and a nuanced approach to improvisation and group interplay. Encouraged by his mother, Ross studied music at Douglas Anderson High School, and later at Florida State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Studies, and at the University of New Orleans, where he graduated with a Master of Music. In 2007 he starred with his ensemble in the documentary Chops by filmmaker Bruce Broder, which won first prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, recorded during the Essentially Ellington Festival organized by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director and famous trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. In this annual event the best high school jazz groups from all over the United States compete, and that year Ross won the highest recognitions with his band.
