I have seen flamingos a few times in the wild, but I was never close enough to take good photos.
These Chilian flamingos are at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago Illinois. I learned that in hot weather countries flamingos keep cool by standing in the water and that they do the opposite here and heat their water temperature to 70° so that the flamingos are comfortable even when it is snowing!
They are listed as near threatened.
Flamingos are born with white feathers and the color changes to pink because of the carotenoids in their diet of brine shrimp.
Flamingos sleep standing on one leg with their head resting on their back.
This ring billed gull flew in and seemed to want to pose for a few photos, but more likely he was checking to see if the flamingos had any food he could steal!
