Sunday Stamps ~ Bison

Bison or Buffalo, what is the difference? Both animals look very similar, but the Bison have larger heads, humps and are just bigger overall. This particular 35 cent stamp was issued in 1981, and is part of the “endangered species” series. These large fellas were nearly killed off in the early 1900’s, due to hunting mainly. Next on the endangered list is the Cougar, featured on this 12 cent stamp issued in 1977. Sure wouldn’t want to run into one of these big cats, unless in a zoo. The Vancouver island Marmot 17 cent stamp is also part of the endangered species series. Also issued in 1981, and it does appear that this animal is struggling to get off that list.
The 8 cent Calgary stamp commemorates their centennial. Photo taken at the annual “Calgary Stampede”. Fun fact: the first Stampede took place in 1912, and has being going strong ever since. Everyone should go at least once in a lifetime.
