Greetings!
Halo Season 2 starts where it left off from the previous season. The Master Chief and his team are still continually under scrutiny by the very people who are still using them in completing dangerous missions yet they treat them as "unfit" in some terms, especially their mental capability. As a fan, it is sickening to see such a plot but hey this is only a series, and movie outfits sometimes have the knack of annoying fans.
Halo (Season 2, Episode 1) is all about the things that the Master Chief has done, seen, thinking, and doing. Season 2, Episode 1 is still heavily focused on the mentality of Master Chief which is still under scrutiny by a man that replaces Dr. Catherine Halsey in running the Spartan Program.
An unexpected replacement
To be honest I am not expecting that there will be a replacement in place of Dr. Halsey as she went missing during the events of Season 1. Dr. Halsey's replacement is Mr. Ackerson. Right at the bat when Mr. Ackerson and Master Chief talked privately it is already clear to me that he is up to no good as he is portraying the Master Chief as "unfit" to be sent on missions.
Showcase of Master Chief Skills
Once again I like it when this episode showcases the skill of Master Chief even without the help of Cortana. We have seen from Season 1 how Master Chief became more lethal when Cortana took control of him. Once Cortana took control of Master Chief his state became godly as he was able to defeat the enemy all by himself. This episode showcases the raw skill of Master Chief which is very satisfying to watch even without the help of Cortana.
Sickening politics and lies
What I don't like about this episode is the magnitude of how the corruption and lies took much of the center stage. While it is understandable that this is only a series that depicts real-life politics and lies I think the magnitude is just too much. With that being said I felt that this episode is leading to darker infighting among the UNSC officials where the Spartans are the target of a corrupt official named Mr. Ackerson. It is also in this episode that the UNSC is blatantly telling lies about its servicemen and servicewomen in uniforms.
A surprise and plot twist
This episode did manage to give the fans some twist, surprise, and a glimpse of some of the forces of the covenant and their capability to glass a planet. In the twist, I was not expecting Soren to fall into a trap and get caught. His arrest led me to think who was the one that made him take the bait. The surprise, which to me is not quite a surprise is the show of force of the covenant at the end of Episode 1 which I think they should have shown to the fans the galactic force they are. Showing some of the forces of the covenant at the end of this episode made me want to see more of the covenant's force since Season 1 failed to show the true capability of the Covenant and in this episode, they are beginning to show some of those forces that made me the galactic forces they are.
Action sequence and story
In terms of the action sequence of episode 1, I say that episode 1 did great at it. But in terms of the story, I do not like the magnitude of scrutiny on the "fitness" of Master Chief and his fellow Spartans. Although it is understandable that this is only a series I think they should have made it more subtle and not made it take much of the episode's magnitude though it is effective it only makes the series more redundant since it was shown already with great magnitude in season 1.
Conclusion
All in all this series is a good one though it is a little bit redundant by adding a lot of focus on the "fitness" of Master Chief it did well in the battle sequence of Master Chief while he is on his own taking down multiple Covenant enemies on his own. After this episode, I am very much interested to see why Master Chief said that the Covenant is more of doing a "training" than glassing a planet.
