Costa Rica is a bird lovers paradise. Parrots, Toucans and thousands of other types of birds live in the American Isthmus. We were staying in the hills near La Fortuna in a place near the jungle known for Toucans. One thing we learned is that there are different types. The one above would be a Yellow Throated Toucan.
The Yellow Throated Toucan usually had friends with it and they come out in the morning and late afternoon. I can't wait to process some of the higher quality photos from our zoom lens. Even with a 105mm lens on 30x or more zoom, the only conclusion one can make is to get excellent photos of birds you need some serious equipment and a lot of luck.
Here's another Toucan in the same area. The Keel-Billed Toucan has that famous rainbow coloured beak.
This Collared Aracari is my personal favourite. They look like an angry cartoon character.
It looks very similar to a Fiery Billed Aracari. We saw all the major Toucans in Costa Rica and probably saw some of the Toucanets too. To see them you basically just have to go to the jungle and wait around.
Toucans live in the trees at night but they are only interesting when their vivid colours show up in the daylight.
The white-fronted parrots visited us every day when we were staying in North West Costa Rica, near Tamarindo. They would fly along the coast and were quite shy but very talkative. They came by in flocks and sometimes couples would linger.
Can't tell what type of parrots these are so we can assume they're the same as above. Costa Rica has a number of green parrots.
This looks like a scaly breasted hummingbird, then again there are so many. It is probably from the Trochilinae family of hummingbirds and was in the La Fortuna Waterfall park.
This is some sort of turkey.
We have some woodpeckers in a tree doing what woodpeckers do best.
And now for the contest entry:
We have what I believe is a blue-grey Tanager enjoying the waste from a papaya next to the pool. There are many more photos of similar fruit loving birds eating the papaya on our better camera but they are awaiting processing. Thank you for reading and have a nice week!
Photos were taken with an S24, an iphone 16 pro or a zv-e10 with an sony fe 24-105mm f/4 g lens but were transferred to a phone with a considerable loss of quality.
