Music undoubtedly has an important place in our lives. Whether we are happy or unhappy, most of us love listening to music. We think we can't enjoy something that makes us feel a negative emotion, but a new study says just the opposite.
A study published in the journal PLoS ONE on April 10, 2024, reveals that negative emotions felt while listening to music can produce pleasure. In this study, researchers investigated why listening to sad music can be enjoyable. In this research conducted with 50 music students, 82% of the students say that removing the element of sadness fromtheir chosen music reduced the enjoyment they get. This shows that there is a direct connection between sadness and pleasure. Although it is thought that pleasure from sad music comes indirectly through movement, this study challenges previous studies by suggesting that sadness itself increases pleasure in music. Frankly, I enjoy listening to music whether I am happy or unhappy, but I never thought that the negative emotions felt while listening to music could produce pleasure.
