"I'm popular and intelligent; I can't be displaced by a nonentity who is on scholarship." These are the words Pearl said to Janet and Christine when she was told by Janet that a new girl just joined the class yesterday when she was not around, and the girl seems quite intelligent.
"I'm not bothered girls because I've been the queen of this school since my first year, so who will dare to displace me in my third year, definitely no one not even......", Pearl said and paused, then turned to Janet to ask for the new girl's name.
"What's the girl's name?" Pearl asked Janet, giving her an arrogant look.
"Her name is Pearl also; you both answer the same name," Janet replied with a smile.
This got Pearl, and she desperately wanted to see the new girl in her class who also bears the same name as her. But unfortunately, the new girl is not around yet; she came a bit late today. Everyone in the class knew there would be trouble, as they all knew the first pearl to be an arrogant girl who liked to step on everyone's toes. Pearl isn't loved by many because of her way of life, and that makes her popular because she is given lots of unpleasant names by the other students.
After some minutes, their chemistry teacher entered the class and was about to start her lecture when Pearl rushed in; this time it was Pearl Michaels, the new girl.
"I'm sorry, ma'am," Pearl Michaels said as she quickly found her way to her seat.
She sat down, breathing heavily, when her eyes came into contact with the first Pearl, whose name is Pearl Jackson. Pearl Jackson looked at Pearl Micheals with a destructive grin, and that got Pearl Micheals worried, trying to figure out who the girl grinning at her was and why she didn't see her yesterday when she was introduced to the class.
Pearl Jackson was given the nickname "Sad Pearl" because she hardly smiled, while Pearl Michaels was given the nickname "Pretty Pearl" because of her beautiful smile.
After the chemistry class, Sad Pearl walks up to Pretty Pearl, followed by Sad Pearl's two bodyguards, Janet and Christine, as they are fondly called because they always follow Sad Pearl around.
"I was informed you are the new girl who bears the same name as me," Pearl started.
"Oh, your name is Pearl? That's awesome; nice to meet you, Pearl," pretty Pearl said, extending a handshake to sad Pearl, which she ignored.
"Okay, I'm Pearl Michaels, the new girl. I would love to work with you," pretty Pearl innocently said, and the whole class busted into laughter.
Pretty Pearl was wondering why everyone was laughing at what she said. "I shouldn't have said that?" Pretty Pearl asked, looking around.
"Oh yeah, you shouldn't have said that", one of their classmates responded.
"I don't care what your name is; don't get ahead of yourself and watch your back. Don't get in my way and just sink in your low life; I hope you get that," sad Pearl said with a loud hiss as she turned away from the pretty pearl table with Janet and Christine.
After Sad Pearl left, a girl walked up to Pretty Pearl to encourage her and cheer her up against what Sad Pearl told her.
"Hey Pearl, I'm Celine; don't think too much about what she said. That's how she is; that's the reason everyone calls her Sad Pearl. She has no friends except Janet and Christine, who follow her around for her money. You are beautiful; don't let her words get to you, okay?" Celine said with a smile.
"Thanks, Celine. I'm just surprised to see and hear her speak that way to someone she barely knows. That's so unfair, but it's fine. I won't cross her path because she seems like a troublemaker," Pretty Pearl said.
"She sure is; it's obvious, isn't it?" Celine asked, and the two girls laughed out loud.
"She is indeed a sad pearl; that's not so good, though," the pretty pearl replied.
"See you around, Pearl," Celine said as she returned to her seat.
It was time for the class mid-assessment, sad pearl, and Pretty Pearl hadn't been getting along well although Sad Pearl always made sure to hurt Pretty Pearl in one way or the other. She placed glue on Pretty Pearl's chair which later tore her skirt but the pretty pearl maintained her good manners and she was liked by all especially because of her beautiful smile.
They sat for the mid-assessment, and as usual, sad pearl came first, although pretty pearl was so close to first. Sad Pearl has 95% while Pretty Pearl has 93%. This made the class and teachers hail Pretty Pearl for her good grades, but this didn't go well with Sad Pearl. She was then determined to devise means to get back to Pretty Pearl.
The next day, sad Pearl ruined pretty Pearl's locker and destroyed some of her belongings, which she kept in the locker. It was reported, but Sad Pearl pleaded not guilty as there was no evidence pointing to her as the culprit. When the CCTV cameras were checked, two masked men were seen destroying Pretty Pearl's locker. Sad Pearl was making fun of Pretty Pearl, as she knows she is not financially buoyant enough to get some of her destroyed properties back in no time.
This gets to some of their classmates who don't like Sad Pearl's attitude towards Pretty Pearl. There is a boy in their class who is rich and quiet; he happens to be Sad Pearl's crush, but the boy isn't interested in Sad Pearl because of her bad attitude. His name is Kennedy; he is handsome and loved by all. His physical appearance makes everyone love him, though he is quite intelligent too.
Kennedy approached Pretty Pearl and promised to help her. The next day, Kennedy took a pretty pearl shopping trip and got different things for her, much more expensive than what the sad pearl destroyed. On getting back to school, Kennedy drove Pretty Pearl in his car and helped her with the luggage to be put in her locker, which had been repaired by the school authority.
As they dropped from the car, sad Pearl was outside with Janet and Christine, and they saw Kennedy with pretty Pearl approaching the entrance.
"Kennedy, what are you doing with this low class?" sad Pearl asked Kennedy, giving pretty Pearl a stern look.
"It's none of your business; come on, Pearl," Kennedy replied, calling out to Pretty Pearl as they both entered.
"Did he just say it's none of my business?" sad Pearl asked her friends angrily.
Sad Pearl hissed and dashed in angrily, leaving Janet and Christine outside. Sad Pearl went into the classroom and sat on Pretty Pearl's chair.
"Must you look for trouble? Why are you sitting on Pearl's chair?" Celine asked.
"Get me a coffee, right away," sad Pearl said, pointing at Christine, who ran after her with Janet into the class.
Without saying a word, Christine ran to the cafeteria to get coffee for Sad Pearl. She couldn't question her order because Sad Pearl was the boss. After a few minutes, Christine returned with a cup of coffee and handed it over to Sad Pearl.
After arranging her belongings in her locker, Pretty Pearl and Kennedy entered the classroom, and every one of their classmates was clapping and cheering. They saw how Kennedy helped Pretty Pearl with her bags while entering the school.
Pretty Pearl walked up to her seat and said, "Pearl, excuse me, I want to sit."
"Oh, really, my bad," sad Pearl said as she reluctantly stood up, and in a twinkle of an eye, there was a coffee splash on pretty Pearl. "Oops, sorry, my bad," sad Pearl said as he chuckled and went to her seat.
"Oh my God, why did you do that?" pretty Pearl shouted, and Celine rushed to her to help.
"I knew she had an evil plan immediately. She sat on your seat. Come on, Pearl, let's go change your dress; it's ruined," Celine said, taking pretty Pearl to the restroom.
Kennedy was looking at the whole drama while a sad Pearl smiled at him. This prompted Kennedy to stand and walk up to the sad pearl.
"Hey witch, I'll give you a last warning: don't you ever bother Pearl anymore, or else you're not going to love the outcome. Am I clear? Take this as a friendly warning; I won't be so kind next time; you know what I'm capable of, right?" Kennedy said.
Before Sad Pearl could say anything, Kennedy turned his back and left. After some minutes, Pretty Pearl and Celine returned from the restroom. Kennedy looked at pretty Pearl and smiled; sad Pearl was looking at them, and her anger aggravated.
After a month, it was time for their end-of-semester examination. They sat for the examination and were anxiously expecting their results. In the process of that, the school held a quiz where sad pearl and pretty pearl were to represent their class in the first stage, and later one of them was chosen for the second and final stage, where the winner was handsomely awarded.
At the end of the first stage, both pearls were tied, and then they were asked to do a one-week project of caring for a puppet as a child. Their homes were visited by the school authority without their prior knowledge, and hidden cameras were placed to monitor their activities. Unfortunately, at the end of the project, Pretty Pearl won because she took better care of the puppet than Sad Pearl. A video clip of their activities was played for them, and they were both surprised to see that they were monitored closely.
Pretty Pearl went to the second and last stage of the competition, and she won. She was celebrated by everyone, and two days later, their results were out. Surprisingly, pretty pearl came first in their class, and this doesn't go well with sad pearl. Pretty Pearl had 96% while Sad Pearl had 93%. By this time, Janet and Christine had switched alliances; they were closer to Pretty Pearl, who was trying to be her friend. Sad Pearl noticed everyone had deserted her; she wanted to exercise her bossy right on Janet and Christine, who are now enjoying Pretty Pearl's company where they were not treated as slaves.
"Janet, why are you clinging to that nobody? Don't you dare," sad Pearl said to Janet.
"Sorry, sad pearl, the shoe is on the other foot now. Get the readings on the wall, baby girl," Janet replied, busting into laughter with Christine as they left her standing.
"Sad pearl, sad pearl, is that what they call me?" the sad pearl was left asking herself. She couldn't cope with being abandoned by her friends and other classmates. She couldn't resume with them for the final semester, so she changed her school to a different one.
