    Hello everyone! Pozdrav svima!

This week I'm going to show you how to play when faced Even Stevens ruleset.

    The Ruleset

First of all lets see what this ruleset is all about. How to take advantage of it and what you need to pay attention to.

    ruleset_even-stevens.png

Only Monsters with even Mana costs may be used in battles.

This is fairly straightforward ruleset, there are no special tricks for this ruleset, but having an idea of mana points of a few Monsters helps in predicting what your opponent can and cannot use.

I will list a couple of Monsters that I usually use from each splinter, so you can get an idea what to use yourself and what to expect from your opponent. Some splinters have better even mana cards, other splinters have better odd mana cards.
Of course, I can't show all of them to you here, but you can see what cards synergize together.

This list contains just a couple of Modern format cards, because those are the ones I actually own.

    splinterDragon.pngimage.pngimage.pngimage.pngimage.png

But, we must not forget that the 0 mana Monsters also fall into this ruleset! They are very valuable addition to any line-up, especially with low mana cap.

Some of the mentioned Monsters I used in the battle I will show you in this post, so make sure you read on.

    THE BATTLE

This is the part of the post where I will show you one of my battles featuring Even Stevens ruleset.

I used a combination of summoner and Monsters in that way that I could cover all possible attack types of my opponent's Monsters. Read on and you will find out what, how and why.

    Battle Ruleset

First, I will try to explain each part of today's battle ruleset, so you get the better understanding what was I thinking when I picked my line-up.

    Ruleset.png

    Healed Out
All healing abilities are removed from Monsters and Summoners.
You can skip Monsters and summoners having Affliction. Life Leech is not impacted by this ruleset.

    Even Stevens
Only Monsters with even Mana costs may be used in battles.
There are no special tricks for this ruleset, but having an idea of mana points of a few Monsters helps in predicting what your opponent can and cannot use.

    Armored Up
All Monsters have 2 Armor in addition to their normal Armor stat.
Use magic attacks, but the opponent will do the same, so focus on HP. Is countered by Rust or Wizard of Eastwood's summoner ability.

Mana cap for this battle is 20 mana
This is mid-low mana pool, so we have to really be careful to optimize mana cost of Monsters we choose.

    Available splinters
For this battle we had all splinters available except Water. My opponent chose Dragon with Death and I chose Life.

    Battle Strategy

Since we had Armored Up ruleset next to Even Stevens I expected my opponent to use Magic attack Monsters, that's why I put Pelacor Conjurer in the front with his Magic Reflect ability. But also, Flying helps to evade Melee or Ranged attacks. In case some of the Ranged attacks get through I used Ilthain summoner that gives Return Fire to my whole team (with +1 Speed on top of that). And the rest of the team... well you'll have to read further to find out what and why.

    Battle Line-Up

You can see the line-up from both teams in battle screenshot right after this section. I will go through my line-up and explain why was each card picked and put in that spot.

    SUMMONER
    Summoner

    ILTHAIN

Life splinter Epic Riftwatchers summoner that costs 4 mana. Very popular choice for Life splinter.

    +1 Speed to friendly Monsters.
Return Fire - When hit with a Ranged attack, Monsters with Return Fire will return reduced damage (divided by 2, rounded up) back to their attacker.

This is one the popular summoners lately, because of the mana cost and what it brings to the table. Especially since Untamed set rotated to Wild.
    1st POSITION ("TANK")
    Tank

    PELACOR CONJURER

Life splinter Common card. Costs only 2 mana and has no attack, but it's packed with some great abilities.

Flying - Has an increased chance of evading (25%) Melee or Ranged attacks from Monsters who do not have the Flying ability.
Magic Reflect - When hit with Magic damage, does reduced Magic damage back to the attacker.
Divine Shield - The first time the Monster takes damage it is ignored.

I picked this Monster as a tank because I wanted it to reflect the magic (and ranged) damage back to attackers.
    2nd POSITION
    2ndPosition

    SUNKAI HARVESTER

Life splinter Common card. Costs 4 mana and has 2 Melee attack.

Reach - Melee attack Monsters with the Reach ability may attack from the second position on the team.
Oppress - Does double damage when attacking an enemy that has no attacks.

I picked this Monster in case my if opponent went with same strategy with Pelacor Conjurer in front, Oppress would hurt him.
    3rd POSITION
    5thPosition

    SOUL FIEND

Life splinter Legendary card. Costs 0 mana, has 1 melee attack.

I picked this Monster as a spot filler, and to waste one opponent's attack on it.
    4th POSITION
    2ndPosition

    DAX PARAGON

Life splinter Epic card. Costs only 2 mana and has 1 Magic attack.

Amplify - Increases Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns damage to all enemy Monsters by 1.
Affliction - When a Monster with Affliction hits a target, it has a chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.

I picked this Monster for the Amplify ability to boost reflected damage.
    5th POSITION
    5thPosition

    TIME MAGE

Life splinter Epic card. Costs 4 mana and has 2 Magic attack.

Slow - Reduces the Speed of all enemy Monsters by 1.
Rust - Reduces the Armor of all enemy Monsters.

I picked this Monster for Magic attack, slowing down the opponent Monsters and reducing their armor.
    6th POSITION
    5thPosition

    DOCTOR BLIGHT

Amazing Neutral legendary card. Costs 4 mana, does 2 Magic attack and has a set of amazing abilities.

Affliction - 50% chance of applying Affliction (cannot be healed) on the target.
Camouflage - This Monster cannot be targeted unless it's in the first position.
Poison - Attacks have a chance to apply poison.
Scavenger - Gains 1 max health each time any Monster dies.

This Monster is a vital member in most of my line-ups, especially in Even Stevens ruleset.

    Battle Flow

This was quite short battle, only 4 rounds, and it was a one way street from the beginning.

    Round1Title.png

    Round1.gif

Right from the start of first round the choice of Pelacor Conjurer proved to be a bullseye. Opponent Monsters had 2 attacks missed and one Magic attack reflected back to the attacker, while my guys almost took down his tank.

    Round2Title.png

    round2.gif

Round two started off with another two misses from the opponent attackers and their first two Monsters dying. Only downside in this round was that enemy Dr. Blight managed to apply poison on my Conjurer.

    Round3.png

    round3.gif

My Pelacor Conjurer is still standing and still making enemy attackers miss and get damage reflected back. I can pronounce him MVP of the battle without any hesitation. This round three enemy Monsters died by from my Monsters attacks, leaving their Dr. Blight to fend for himself.

    Round4Title.png

    round4.gif

Pelacor Conjurer finally succumbed to his injuries caused by enemy Poison, but the vengeance was swift and merciless, as Time Mage and Sunkai Harvester removed last enemy figure, Doctor Blight, from the battleground.

    Battle Result

    Result.png

This was Modern Ranked battle in middle of Gold 1 league last season before the new Ranked System. Ah... The good old days, playing against same level decks... 😝

    splitter.png

For those who wish to learn more

I mentioned how every splinter has a couple of Even mana monsters, so I would like to show you an example of couple of them.

    splitter1.png

This was a battle where I used an Epic Death summoner level 5 (Gold league) so I could use level 7 Rare monsters, like Cursed Windeku (for +1 on Melee attack) and Ravenhood Warden (for that +1 Speed). Of course there are other Monsters in there that did their job flawlessly, so you better check out the whole battle.

    splitter2.png

In this battle I used Djinn Oshannus as a tank and when he gets Enraged he becomes almost impossible to hit. While the opponent's team struggles with hitting Oshannus, my guys picked them off one by one.

    splitter3.png

And what would Even Stevens be without the current meta Monster - Grimbardun Smith. He makes everyone's life miserable, except the people who own him (like me 😎). With healing in the back he's very hard to kill, he's the king of Keep Your Distance and Fog of War rulesets. 😆
