I did a thing this past weekend.
I took a short hike into the mountains to a waterfall, stripped down to my underwear, and stood under it for as long as I could, which, for those of you who may be wondering, wasn’t very long.
More than the cold, what surprised me at first was the impact of the water on my head. Though the water flow wasn’t very heavy, the height from which it fell was significant enough to make it really slam into me.
After that, the cold quickly set in and ten seconds or so later, I had the worst case of brain freeze (like some people get from eating snow cones and Slushies too quickly) I’ve ever had. It was completely unbearable.
Despite the pain, I’m eager to do it again, and plans are set for another round of snowmelt bathing in March.

in the eyes of my son
an entire universe
the smell of perfume
in an empty room
covered in frost
a morning bride
running between houses
children play
the landscape marked by
billowing smokestacks
your little hand in mine
moments frozen in time
between day and night
a kind of blue
