Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou 「少女終末旅行」 Girls' Last Tour (2017, 12 episodes)

in voilk •  8 days ago

Two girls, who might be the last surviving human beings in Japan, travel through empty post-apocalyptic city of the future, scavenging all the food that they can find. They have no destination and no plan other than to keep moving. Nothing threatens them, other than things like collapsing old bridge.

A slow open-ended non-supernatural show, calm and peaceful (nobody dies), with little mystery but no story. Some sight-seeing in abandoned techno-city and decent yet partially successful attempt at mood-making. A nice break from more emotionally intense shows.

The show have the least number of characters -- only two, if you don't count few others who appear only for a brief time and don't stick around. Development of the story is lacking and so is the character development. There is a weak friendship element but it is more like co-dependency as it is easy for two people to be friends when there are no other people around...

By that description the show should be boring but somehow it was not boring to me and I'm not exactly sure why. There is something that makes it watchable that is hard to describe. Maybe little joys that girls share on their journey, like positioning empty cans so that falling rain makes the music rhythm? Or lack of tragedy and absence of sense of urgency as wandering desolate city is just a day-to-day living to characters? Or maybe their stoicism and perseverance without heroism? It is a likeable show overall, despite how little it have to offer.
