Unfavoured Climbs

One foot first, then the other
Inch by inch up the climb.
A son, brother and a lover,
the progress is slow and wearisome.
Step by step, a stumble here,
The rocks clatter and raise dust.
Up at a crawl, down at speed,
    The asymmetry goes unlost.

Helping hands are too few and far,
to reach and gain a purchase.
The sight of sun warms the peaks,
To give the depths some purpose.
While the mountains tower far above,
    The journey's far from run.
    Instead of stares of determination,
Lays the despair of the outdone.

Broken and taken, left to death,
To look at the bright light fade.
As all else builds and greens to life,
The only growth is in the shade.
Tested and failed at each attempt,
No more chance will come to pass.
    Stalled to still and fallen,
    Shattered like graceless glass.
