Social media usage can have both positive and negative effects on mental health and its impact can vary depending on individual factors and patterns of usage.
Mostly, some of the effects creep up on you without your notice and the rest happen because you give room for it, because you allow it to. Take overusing it and comparing your life with other people and the life they display, as an instance. One of the effects that it could have on you is jealousy. Jealousy is typically a normal feeling(sometimes) but social media manipulates you to be jealous in such a way that you don't see the difference and you don't even bother to think.
Here are some ways in which social media usage can affect mental health:
Positive Effects
Networking and social support
Social media platforms can help people stay connected with friends and family
especially those who are geographically
distant. This sense of connection can
provide emotional support and reduce
feelings of isolation.Information and Awareness
Social media can serve as a source of
information helping people stay informed about current events, news and various topics of interest.Positive Interactions:
Engaging in positive interactions such as receiving compliments, likes, and supportive comments can boost self-esteem and contribute to a sense of belonging.
Negative Effects
Comparison and Envy
Being onstantly exposed to curated and make-believe versions of other people's lives on social media can lead to unhealthy social comparisons, feelings of inadequacy and envy. It could lead to a person questioning his own pace and achievements in life, leading to an unhealthy esteem and feelings of inadequacy.Cyberbullying and Harassment
Negative interactions on social media such as cyberbullying, trolling and online harassment can lead to increased stress, anxiety and even depression.Fear of Missing Out
Seeing other people's posts about social activities and events that one is not a part of can lead to feelings of missing out and social anxiety.Overuse and Addiction
For this one right here, a good number of us are victims to it and it takes dissasociating from it to know how invested and the toll it takes on us.
Excessive use of social media especially when it becomes compulsive and interferes with daily activities can contribute to addiction-like behaviors and negatively impact mental well-beingBody Image and Self-Esteem Issues
Constant exposure to unrealistic beauty
standards and images on social media
can contribute to body image dissatisfaction and lower self-esteem
particularly among young people.Distorted Reality
People often present a polished and positive version of themselves on social media which can create a distorted view of reality and make it challenging to differentiate between online personas and real-life experiences.Sleep Disruption
Overuse of social media particularly close to bedtime can disrupt sleep patterns and negatively impact sleep quality leading to fatigue and mood disturbances would like to request every individuals who use social media on a daily basis to go through a day without using them.
If you have ever tried to stay away from social media, you ould have realized that after a few hours, you will start becoming restless ,desperate and uneasy.
And eventually, you will most likely grab the
phone and start using the social media.
If you haven't tried it, do so, just to guage your addiction to the media.
And if it turns out that youre hooked, then(if you please, and for your own good), make a conscious effort to provide proper attention on the usage. Cause truly, social media damages our mental health.
You know, dopamine, a chemical released during smoking and drinking, is released when we use social media. This shows how dangerous this mere act can be.
If you are using media platforms as Facebook, Tiktok,Instagram -and the likes-and making hell lot of money out of it, then I don't see a problem(doesn'tmean that there isn't). But, if you are using it to spend your time, stalk people and copy them, chat with friends and all, then you are hooked up and addicted. And that addiction can be detrimental if not checked properly
It's important to note that the impact of social nedia on mental health is complex and can vary widely from person to person. Some individuals may be more susceptible to the negative effects due to pre-existing mental health conditions,
personality traits or other factors. To promote healthy social media usage individuals can consider setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, engaging in offline activities and seeking support if they experience negative
mental health outcomes.
Your mental health should be top of your self-care and Healthcare list, okay?
