I like to describe it this way; that Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ who has famously been identified worldwide as Brymo, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, sonic artist, actor and author who was born and raised specifically for the art of music and artistic creativity. His music and sounds are much of a therapy to both the body and the mind. I love all his music because of the melody and sound but most of all because of the messages he passes through his music.
Amongst numerous music lists he has released, one music has stood out for me. The song was contained in his album titled "Yellow" which he released on 1st April 2020. This song has caught my attention so much that I cannot go a week without playing it on repeat. This song he titled it BLACK MAN, BLACK WOMAN.
Brymo used this song to throw a great light on the struggle that the black woman and the black man face in their day to day living, specifically using Africa as a case study. In this music he distinguished the difference between a black man and a black woman. He specifically explained the division of labor that exists within these two entities. He distinguished this difference while showing great respect to them as well. He specifically explained some concepts.
Struggle.
Respect.
The blame game.
The untold value.
The persistence spirit.
Black Woman: Brymo believes that the struggle of an average African woman is having to accept that she is enough. She works very hard and impacts society greatly with her wisdom and strength but yet doesn't accept that she can be enough for herself and the environment. This has made the black woman to constantly blame others for her actions. But Brymo acknowledges that the Black woman owns the whole town, not to impress some silly clowns but that she solves problems on her own and wouldn't care about solving them.
Brymo depicted that the black woman is a strong woman. She wears her pain like Amour, she faces the challenges in her day to day living and tries to find a solution to these challenges. This song believed that the black woman doesn't really think of a man in order to survive. It depicted that a black woman is by nature an independent woman who does great things with her skills and knowledge without looking up to the other gender.
This song said out loud the untold value in the midst of black woman's life. I faithfully remember my mum seeing me through the university single handedly, and the very definition of all that this song has explained was all I could see in my mum. Strong, daring, calm, confident, persistent, respectful, wisdom and understanding, meekness and will always listen. The value of morals which she inculcated in me has never left me till date. I can confidently affirm that my mum is the definition of a black woman!
Black Man: This song appraised the strength of the average black man. The black man uses his strength to bend the whole town, conquer situations and excel in challenging times. He uses his prowess to maneuver difficult times because he believes that difficult times never last for long but tough people last.
The black man carries the problems of the world, and he literally doesn't care to solve these problems on his own. The black man wants a world with equity and justice, he wants no discrimination and he most of all wants people to live their lives without any fear of favor in view.
Solving problems is one quality that nature has blessed the black man with. He is endowed with the sense of strength, responsibility, security and protection, goal driven, daring, caring, and most of all, respect for others no matter the race or gender.
Brymo's BLACK MAN BLACK WOMAN is a piece of art to the soul. It's a song that faithfully crests the personality of the black people in the form of music. Try and check the song out and thank me later.
