My learning English 8: Adjectives and its order. Some use of "How..." (A2)

in voilk •  4 months ago

In my journey of English learning, I am registering some topics according to the level of my advance in the understanding of this language. Not is something exact but just a guide. Today I will share two points very useful, the adjectives and some questions formed with the word "How..."

    Adjectives

In English, the adjectives go before the substantives. So, the black book or the little table and the brown child, etc. This is very important for talker in some strange languages, like the Spanish, where the adjectives go after the substantives. Now imagine that we have not one but more adjectives, what is its order? Let's go ahead with the next orientation: Opinion, size, physical quality, shape, age, color, origin and material. It means that if I want to express my opinion about something and I use and adjective, it goes first, but I want to talk about the age, it goes after others features in regard to the physical qualities and others, for example.

    • She has a beautiful old skirt.
    • We have a large rounded black table.
    • He is a kind slim old Brazilian friend.
    • It is an ugly small square old wood object.

In this topic, it's important to pay attention of the use of the demonstratives adjectives because help us very much. Its use is for referring to something, in singular or plural, according to the distance with the speaker. If it's close, we use: "this or these" and if it's away, we use: "that or those".

    • This blue notebook is mine.
    • That red laptop is her.
    • These colorful pencils are ours.
    • Those brown boxes are William's family.

    "How..." Questions

Besides the "WH-" Questions, we have other question structures very interesting. They are formed with the word How... Between these, we have the next:

    • How often? We use it to express the frequency of an action. For example, How often did you go to the school?

I like very much this question because it can answer with adverbs of frequency, such as: Always, usually, frequently, often, sometimes, occasionally, seldom, rarely, never, etc.

    • How far? We use it to express the distance between places or objects. For example, How far is the park? It's 5 km from my house.

Here is important to know the different forms of measurements: km, mts, cm, etc.

    • How long? We use it to express the length or the duration of an action. For example, How long does it take you to finish this job?

The periods of time here are very important: minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, etc.

    • How much and how many? We use them to count the quantities of something. Pay attention if it's uncountable things or countable things. If it's countable, we use how many? For example, how many cookies did you take? If it's uncountable, we use how much? For example, how much did the delivery cost?
