We really enjoy catching up with people and friends we have been running with for a long time, both before, during, and after parkrun.
I have been parkrunning locally for over 10 years, I know lots of people and have even seen many of their children grow up and move on with their own lifes.
It was interesting this morning. I ran alone but two of my friends ran together. At coffee, after they wondered why I did not join them like the good old days where we would laugh and joke the whole 5 kilometres, always pushing and urging each other on. “Are you injured?" they asked.
No, I was just running my zone 2 pace. It's a bit boring, but every small workout is supposed to be like a small brick for your fitness foundation.
It was not long before we were all comparing our garmin data. The two guys that ran together finished at the same time and are roughly the same age. The fitter guy run was mostly in zone 2, and the less fit guy was mostly in zone 3 and 4. It looked like they were getting the same workout, happily chatting most of the way. But one was getting an easy aerobic run while the other was getting a harder anaerobic workout.
I reckon I have been unknowingly doing too many of these slightly harder runs over the past few years as I age and need to focus on my own zone 2 for a while and build a better base to my fitness pyramid.
