Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #81

    Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

    Important notes:

    • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
    • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
    • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
    • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
    • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
    • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

    Highlighting @deirdyweirdy, with the story:

    Superwoman!

I'm not a particularly courageous person, but when faced with physical assault it seems I react with rage. Perhaps it'll be the death of me one day, or maybe it will save my life. More likely the geriatric me will roll over and play dead.

    Curator's comment :

D's style is engaging and the piece is humorous with a spike of danger marbled throughout. Recommended reading.

    Highlighting @fashtioluwa, with the story:

    It's Just A Game

We all gathered at the field; both the young and old boys were ready to watch the fight. The boys formed a ring around us; some of the boys were cheering for God'swill while the others were cheering for me. The way the boys cheering for me called my name gave me more morale to want to fight "Demola, Demola, Demola." I could hear my name from all corners of the field.

    Curator's comment :

Fashtioluwa really sets the scene and commands the reader's attention with this fabulously humorous CNF. Great dialogue, tension building and predictable (in a good way) resolution.

    Featured

    Highlighting @nathy33, with the story:

    The story of your arrival

Yes my love, for me the most beautiful of all the babies I had ever seen in my life. But I keep telling you, something was not right, at first you did not breathe and for that reason they put you in a warm bed until you got better, but several hours went by and I could not see you, my tummy was hurting. But every moment I asked about you, I remembered how his beautiful you looked and the fear passed a little, so I spent that long day.

    Curator's comment :

Nathy33 delivers the most wonderful, tearjerking CNF. She relates the story of her son's birth and how she feared for his life because he couldn't breathe on his own. N wears her heart on her sleeve for us to examine: how (at times) she wanted to run away, how tired she was and how her resilience pulled her through so that she could be there for her child when he most needed her. Beautiful!
