Today I will bring you to discover the famous National Museum of Archaeology of Malta.
It’s located in Republic Street, the most important street in the historic center of Valletta. It’s an absolutely unmissable stop during a trip to this beautiful island!
The collection is very large and, therefore, the visit takes about 2 hours.

Oggi vi porto alla scoperta del famoso Museo Nazionale di Archeologia di Malta.
Si trova in Republic Street, la via più importante del centro storico di La Valletta. È una tappa assolutamente imperdibile durante una gita in questa bellissima isola!
La collezione è molto grande e, quindi, la visita richiede circa 2 ore.

The Museum is a collection of artistic creations belonging to the ancient civilizations that populated the island of Malta and the neighboring islands (Gozo and Comino). In particular, during the archaeological excavations, objects of daily use, small statues, ceramic objects, daggers and other decorative elements were found.
The oldest finds date back to 5000 BC, when there were the first human settlements on this island!
Il Museo è una raccolta di creazioni artistiche appartenenti alle antiche civiltà che hanno popolato l’isola di Malta e le isole vicine (Gozo e Comino). In particolare, durante gli scavi archeologici sono stati trovati oggetti di uso quotidiano, piccole statue, oggetti in ceramica, pugnali e altri elementi decorativi.
I reperti più antichi risalgono al 5000 a.C., quando vi furono i primi insediamenti umani in quest’isola!

Very particular finds were also found, such as phallic figures and esoteric objects to which scientists have not been able to give a meaning.
The most famous object is the Sleeping Goddess, an artifact found in the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni and which is the symbol of Malta.
This statue represents a female figure with a large body and intertwined legs and arms. The figure symbolizes birth, death and regeneration: these three aspects were associated with women and female deities in the culture of the time.
Sono stati trovati anche reperti molto particolari, come figure falliche e oggetti esoterici a cui gli studiosi non sono stati in grado di dare un significato.
L’oggetto più famoso è la Dea Dormiente, un reperto trovato nell’Ipogeo di Hal Saflieni e che costituisce il simbolo di Malta.
Questa statua rappresenta una figura femminile con corporatura grossa e gamba e braccia intrecciate. La figura simboleggia la nascita, la morte e la rigenerazione: questi tre aspetti erano nella cultura dell’epoca associati alla donna e alle divinità femminili.
What I liked the most is the fact that in each room there are information panels explaining how the archaeological excavations were carried out and how archaeologists were able to trace the era to which they belong.
The ground floor is dedicated to the Neolithic period and the first floor includes the sections dedicated to the Bronze and Phoenician periods. Furthermore, the Museum often hosts temporary exhibitions, so it combines antiquity and modernity!
Online you can find offers with free tickets if you visit the museum on certain dedicated days, or packages that include entrance to numerous museums at a convenient price. You have no excuse not to visit the island of Malta!
La cosa che mi è piaciuta di più è il fatto che in ogni stanza sono presenti dei pannelli informativi dove spiegano come sono stati realizzati gli scavi archeologici e come gli studiosi sono riusciti a risalire all’era di appartenenza.
Il piano terra è dedicato al periodo Neolitico e il primo piano comprende le sezioni dedicate al periodo del Bronzo e Fenicio. Inoltre, nel Museo sono spesso ospitate delle mostre temporanee, quindi unisce antichità e modernità!
Online si possono trovare offerte con biglietti gratuiti se si visita il museo in alcuni giorni dedicati, oppure pacchetti che comprendono gli ingressi a numerosi musei con un prezzo vantaggioso. Non avete scuse per non visitare l’isola di Malta!
