Individuation and Moana

Hello everyone. Today I will try to talk about the process of individuation and the development of selfhood, all against the backdrop of the movie "Moana."

So, individuation is a process in which the individual strives to reach a psychological phenomenon called selfhood, which encompasses wholeness and indivisibility...

In my own words, my understanding of selfhood is the integration of the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche, which constitutes the integrity and indivisibility of the human personality. From a very interesting article I once read, I'd like to add this:

Selfhood encompasses everything that makes up the individual, including all of their impulses, and since these impulses are contradictory, selfhood encompasses opposites (conscious and unconscious). Furthermore, selfhood not only includes all contradictory elements of the psyche but also integrates them into a unified whole. Thus, achieving selfhood means integrating contradictions within the psyche. The renowned psychiatrist, Carl Jung, considered individuation a natural and organic process through which our secret nature and our individual path are revealed.

According to these words, selfhood is the revelation of our mysterious nature.

So, while traversing the arduous path offered by individuation, one can consciously touch upon the "unconscious" part of the psyche.

Which can be attributed to a part of our mysterious (unknown to us) nature.

Hm... This could be a very intriguing experience...

Anyone who watched this movie might have noticed that she had some conscious visions from the collective memory of her ancestors. 😅
(Unconscious realm, yet merging with consciousness)

Therefore, I have no doubts that this movie illustrates the process of individuation, and the main character of the movie follows this path.

These memories help Moana understand Maui; she recalls how much he did for her ancestors by obtaining fire for them.

And we see that Moana not only finds peace and harmony with Maui but also saves Mother Nature, restoring her heart and fertility.

Moana had some small misunderstandings with her father, who was so protective of her that he got angry when she dreamed of the ocean. But when she returns, we see that he understood everything and is proud of his daughter.

So, I would like to say that peace and harmony in the mind (psyche) lead to peace and harmony with the environment and the people around us.

The journey ends with the islanders rediscovering navigation.

Perhaps Moana tells them that their ancestors "conquered" the sea and were sailors.
