🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

    • Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
    • major (lat.) big

Sometimes it happens that there are simply no birds in the forest. As a rule, this is rare, but it has happened to me more than once that when I went out into the forest in spring or winter, I saw practically no birds. Practically. And yet there is a bird that can always be found at any time of the year, this is the great spotted woodpecker. I always have confidence in these guys.

Strange, but these birds do not visit feeders in parks and courtyards of the city, as do different species of birds such as tits or nuthatches. They are more forest-like. Even though they also participate in group migrations in a mixed flock of birds, they will not follow everyone to the city park, but will remain in the forest.
