Migrants denounce the Texas National Guard

Latin American migrants report that Texas authorities are using rubber bullets and pepper spray while they are on the banks of the Rio Grande, according to this cable from EFE, which corroborated the information. This happens once night falls and the press stops reporting the endless and heartbreaking drama that irregular migration is. A Guatemalan citizen told EFE that a Texan agent attacked him in the banks, forcing him to return to Aztec soil. The guard at the service of the anti-immigrant government of Greg Abbott also appeals to verbal humiliation and the use of laser beams as an irritant against them.

    Electoral Mexico

We have recovered our informative dynamics in time for the big elections of this June 2, in which apparently the ruling political bloc has a firm pole position. Andrés Manuel López Obrador has achieved enough political capital on which Claudia Sheinbaum has built her leadership over opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez. From what I have been able to appreciate, one of the main weaknesses of Gálvez's campaign has been to focus on the painful problem of violence. It is a real one, for sure, but which was not born with AMLO, and which neither she nor Sheinbaum will be able to solve in the next six-year term.

Meanwhile, the economy has been quite resilient in a mostly hostile context for the region and the world, supported by nearshoring and strong trade relations with the other two North American economies. This Sunday, some 98 million Mexicans—extenuated by deadly heat—will elect their representatives to more than 20,000 offices, in a process that has been marred by political assassinations, especially of local aspirants and leaders. Yesterday, Wednesday, a hitman deposited two mortal bullets in the back of the head of an opposition candidate for mayor of Coyuca de Benitez, Guerrero state, during a campaign rally.

    Criminal Honduras

Earlier this week, the spokesman for the Honduran Criminal Investigation Agency reported the gruesome discovery of seven skeletons in clandestine graves in the violent city of San Pedro Sula, almost 200 km north of the capital. The victims were allegedly murdered by the gangs that plague the Central American country, demanding innocent people to leave their homes to then use them as new points for illicit activity. Authorities estimate that there may even be more than 15 people buried in clandestine graves, who may have refused to be extorted. The homicide rate in Honduras far exceeds the world average, although the latest numbers are lower by national standards.
