Castlehunting in Vienna – Schloss Laudon

in voilk •  last month

As some of you might know I have been on a location scouting tour with film makers to find the perfect locations for a movie which I can not state here. What I also have to keep a secret is where the location will be they decided for.
During this 3 day tour we visited a bunch of castles and where I could I took photos of my own. This session has been shot on my Iphone 11 so the quality of the images will not be as crisp as in my last post about the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Today I take you on a small tour through Schloss Laudon.
We have been there on day 2 of our location tour If I remember correctly.

"Laudon Castle is the only moated castle on 9 hectares of land in Vienna. It was first mentioned in a document in 1130 and its current baroque design dates back to the last standardised renovation in 1744. From 1964 to 1975, guests from all over the world experienced the flavour of a grand past in the 5-star luxury hotel. After that, the Federal Academy of Administration used the property for training purposes for almost 50 years. Since March 2024, the property has been temporarily rented out exclusively for film purposes and events. There are several state rooms in the palace: the library from around 1780 is the only neoclassical library with Grisali painting in Vienna with a stucco ceiling and valuable crystal chandelier, the fresco hall is furnished with a continent allegory by Johann Bergl (around 1770) and magnificent crystal chandeliers, in the ‘Sissi Room’ there is an original oil painting of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the ceremonial staircase is very sumptuously furnished with, among other things, an original oil painting of Field Marshal Ernst Gideon Freiherr von Laudon. The palace has a total of 61 rooms. These include the state rooms mentioned above and 9 suites. There are also numerous outbuildings: listed Salettl, restaurant with guest garden and two bowling alleys, listed old mill, staff house, chicken coop, Texion garage, stable building with caretaker's flat, palm house, pond annexe, park annexe, sports centre and 3 tennis courts."

By the way the castle is up for sale for a price of 30 million € if you have that sort of money. But be aware that you need much more than that. Maintaining a castle is not a cheap thing. The person who showed us arround said that in December and January heating costs where 15000€ in total and this was only anti freeze meaning the room temperature is about 5-8 degrees Celsius. Not very comfortable.

I will go through the images with you in a slighlty modified order first showing the castle from the outside before we go inside to check out the amazing rooms.

The main entrance to the castle crossing a cobble stone bridge.

Behind the castle looking on the castle moat.

The backdoor of the castle Laudon.

As we move inside I take you back to the front of the castle where I entered the courtyard.

I immediately get propelled back in time and I imagine how life was here in the times when. we all travelled on horseback and there where no phones and electricity.

Every room had a different style and different flooring as well. Unfortunately I did not photograph the staircase for whatever reason so this is the first interior I took.

The oriental room had a nice little surprise for all who like lions

Must have been cool parties here.

For some reason I really liked the wooden wall. Can you find the hidden door?

    The trophy room

the beautiful tiled stove in the trophy room.

This wall also is hiding a few doors. Behind them there are bookshelfs.

The view from the second story towards the courtyard

Another beautiful floor and a little bit of my hand in the image as well.

    Getting artsy

I pinned this post on worldmappin so it can easily be found.
Thank you so much for your time and attention and I hope to read a comment or two from you dear reader.
    Cheers
