There are places where man and nature meet and understand each other, talk to each other, interact. The La Marchesa farm is a magical place to immerse yourself and enjoy the naturalistic and culinary experience to the fullest, an ideal day to spend with family or children because in places like these they learn much more than in weeks spent at school.
Located a few kilometers from the city of Lavello, not too far from Monte Vulture and the Laghi di Monticchio, the farm is open to all visitors on any day of the week during daylight hours. Some friends have long since told me about this large farm, famous above all for its products derived from buffalo, in particular its dairy products which are truly exquisite and are sold throughout the Lucanian territory and beyond.
It is easily reachable by car, enjoying among other things a magical view because the state road that leads to La Marchesa is full of cherry trees, in this period they are in bloom and the fields are colored with an intense pink and cyclamen.
But now let's come to the most beautiful part of the farm: the buffaloes. The animals are placed in large open fields for grazing and covered on the side where the manger is located. The animals are also divided into at least three large groups: the smaller buffaloes (they do not produce milk), the larger buffaloes (that produce milk) and the older buffaloes (that no longer produce milk). This subdivision allows the farmers to better manage the livestock, especially in the morning when the animals are milked. Here there are over 700 specimens and it is not so easy to manage everything. Furthermore, the diet also varies: the younger animals have cereals for growth, the milked specimens have feed for milk and much more.
We visited the buffaloes by walking around the entire perimeter, a walk of a few hundred meters, also visiting the calving area and the milking area. The buffaloes are not the only animals on the farm, there are also horses, chickens and turkeys, although in smaller quantities than the buffaloes.
Here there is a sales point with a special space set up to eat the products purchased directly on site, during the weekends it might not be so easy to stop and eat a nice 500 gram buffalo mozzarella!
The La Marchesa farm is truly a special place, the children are happy to spend time with the animals and we parents are thrilled to see them so happy and above all educated to respect animals and nature.
