In todays world , where most schools run on the no cane policy, do you think it’s a good move or we should bring back canes into our schools.

For this particular topic, I will making use of my own experience with the issue of using canes in school.

During my first tier of my secondary school, my teachers normally buy cane in packs. We were always beaten with a cane for committing most offence back then even in our hostels. This really helped us to always remember to do the right thing and never misbehave . I mean if you can see marks of the cane you were beaten on your body for committing a crime , then no one will tell you to do the right thing and follow the rules of the school.

It also helped me academics wise. I had a female teacher then who would flog you if you don't score 10/10 in her Continuous assessment Test , what you score will determine the strokes of cane you will get , any student who scores 9/10 gets one stroke of cane on this hand and it's normally painful. She was just trying to make us read and prepare for her test always to atleast get a 9 and passed our exams successfully , which really helped us to become better students academic wise not just in her own subject but in other teachers subject. Right from the time she started flogging us for scoring less in her test I don't think I ever scored less than 7/10.

Our staffrooms then was war , if a student should be invited to come there we know there is a high chance he would be getting flogged for something he did wrong. There is also what they call general flogging where all the teachers will go round and flog a student turn by turn for an offence he committed which was a crazy thing to me. All this really put a fear in me as I am not able to ask questions from my teachers in class because I was scared of what the outcome may be. I couldn't even go and meet my them at the staffroom after the class to explain a topic I didn't understand because I will be having second thoughts that I might have done something wrong to a teacher and immediately the teacher sees me she might have a re-think and decide to flog me for an offence i committed before or even try to badmouth me.

I actually think, the no-cane policy in schools is not just a good move but the best move. Although ,the use of cane had positive effects on us then but the negative effects was more than the positive ones. I sustained alot of injuries from the strokes of canes I was beaten. I even had body aches alot of times. This made me remember when my hostel master flogged a boy mercilessly and he sustained alot of injuries on his body that he had to be treated with immediate effect. He was sacked the next day for this , to know how brutal that was. The use of canes normally affects a child's mentally and physically. You can flog a child and he will still go back to commit the same crime so why not just advice him than inflicting him with much pains or maybe even adopt displinary methods in the school such as :

. Providing a counsellor for the school who would help with counselling and providing support and guidance to help students understand and correct their behavior.

. Teachers or administrators should verbally communicate to students when their behavior is inappropriate or disruptive.

. Students may be required to stay after school for a specified period as a consequence for misconduct.

. Temporary removal of a student from regular classes, typically for more serious offenses or repeated offenses.

. Expulsion of students who refuse to adhere to the rules guiding the school repeatedly.

    Thanks for reading.
