This rarity is OMEGA, an album recorded by Enrique Morente along with the rock group Lagartija Nick. An event, the birth of this new creature, a fusion of the earthy energy of Flamenco with the thunder and lightning of rock, as astonishing as the time it took for its gestation: five decades, perhaps more.
At the end of World War II, the Blues already sounds harder, more urban. Powerful electrified R&B groups occupy stages and black music stations.
In the late 1940s, Ike Turner, in addition to being a musician and DJ at a local radio station in Memphis, leads a band that will be the seed of what, in a short time, will be the R&B band Kings of the Rhythm. The band begins to be known through the waves broadcast by the local radio WROX, and Sam Phillips, owner of the Sun Records label, signs them. In 1950 they will record a classic of R&B, or perhaps a R&R classic. The song I am referring to is “Rocket 88”.

It will be in the 1970s when the flirtations between these two cultures begin. In 1970, flamenco guitarist Sabicas recorded the album "Rock Encounter" with Joe Beck. A project that, to my humble ear, did not become such an encounter. It seems more like a session where great musicians come together, each playing their own thing, and having a good time. But, I don't think you can talk about a fusion of two worlds, two cultures.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, what is known as Flamenco Hippie began. Young flamenco artists start listening to The Beatles, Janis Joplin,... Manuel Molina (see the post dedicated to Lole y Manuel) acknowledges that The Beatles' White Album is a wonderful work. In Seville, at the same time, Smash, a progressive rock group, looks towards flamenco and Manuel Molina joins the band, bringing his acoustic guitar and raspy voice. The fusion also did not fully materialize this time. The band incorporated a flamenco touch and roots, but remained a very interesting rock band.
Smash paved the way for the so-called Andalusian Rock represented by groups like Triana, which in their first album included Manuel Molina's "Todo es de color".
Perhaps there is something else to mention, but it won't be until 1996, with the release of OMEGA, that this story of encounters and disagreements between Flamenco and Rock is concluded. 45 years had passed since the release of Rocket 88.

OMEGA
OMEGA
I have no qualms admitting that it took me more than 10 years to, first, understand this work and then love it. Since its publication, it has faced rejection from a large part of flamenco enthusiasts, perhaps not among the genre's professionals, but among the fans. This work, and others, earned Enrique Morente the nickname of the "killer of flamenco singing". However, the world of rock welcomed it with great enthusiasm.
A few lines below is an image that shows how Omega made me feel when I heard it for the first time.
The project took about six months to come together. There is an excellent documentary that shows the entire creative process, from the emergence of the idea to its materialization. Six tough months, during which the project could have fallen apart more than once. Once the idea became a reality, the major record labels did not want to release it. It was too risky of a project to support.
If Enrique Morente was the centerpiece of the project, we must mention Lagartija Nick, the other protagonist of this adventure. An independent rock group from Granada, like Morente himself, which, like many bands from the eighties, emerged with the late arrival of punk to Spain, bringing to the project the nerve of young rock-punk bands.
. The project has three pillars: Enrique Morente, a passionate fan of Federico García Lorca and Leonard Cohen, and the two mentioned, Lorca and Leonard Cohen. And now, onto the album.
Omega (Poema Para Los Muertos) Lyrics: Federico García Lorca
