Hace poco hablaba con mi nieta mayor sobre las cosas que le gustaría hacer. Me comentó que tenía dos grandes aspiraciones, tocar la batería y practicar la escalada. No había terminado de mencionar las dos actividades cuando inmediatamente comenzó a enumerar las razones por las que le sería difícil lograr esas metas.
Con la batería decía que no tendría el espacio adecuado para practicar, ya que es un instrumento bastante sonoro y en la urbanización donde vive seguro que los vecinos se quejarían cuando estuviese tocando. A la escalada también le encontró obstáculos, es un deporte que exige mucha fuerza y flexibilidad y ella anda lidiando con un pequeño problema cervical que en ocasiones le resulta bastante molesto.
En su razonamiento había mucho de verdad, ninguna de las razones expuestas eran descartables. Sin embargo, me llamó la atención su convencimiento de que esas condiciones fuesen inamovibles…
Le comenté que quizá más adelante las cosas fuesen distintas, después de todo ella estaba comenzando la vida. Era bastante probable que pudiera encontrar el sitio adecuado para practicar la batería sin molestar a nadie y seguramente su cuello mejoraría lo suficiente para permitirle dedicarse a escalar muros. Ella levantó los hombros y asintió como para ser complaciente conmigo.
En los temas de los logros personales trato de ser prudente. No me atrevo a decir que todas las barreras existen solamente en nuestra imaginación, reconozco que hay cuestiones del entorno que no podemos controlar a voluntad.
Sin embargo, examinando atentamente lo que ha sido mi vida, no me cabe la menor duda que en muchas ocasiones somos nosotros mismos los que ponemos el mayor freno al paralizarnos frente a los obstáculos. Y que a veces preferimos tirar la toalla y no seguir adelante.
Lograr nuestros sueños es principalmente un asunto que requiere disciplina, voluntad y determinación, unos ingredientes que no se adquieren de manera natural. Están en nosotros de forma latente, en potencia, y todos los podemos desarrollar. Pero hay que trabajarlos como si se tratara de un músculo cualquiera. Si logramos tener eso presente es muy probable que encontremos la motivación para vencer los obstáculos.
Durante mi juventud soñaba con tocar medianamente bien la guitarra para ser parte de una banda. Logré tener mi guitarra y avancé un poco, pero a mí me costaba mucho, no tenía una gran agudeza auditiva como para sobresalir. No obstante persistía en el intento. Llegó el momento en que tuve que decidir y le di prioridad a los estudios. Luego formé mi familia, vinieron los hijos y la guitarra quedó relegada, pero nunca olvidada.
Más adelante, dos de mis hijos también quisieron tocar la guitarra y ambos tenían excelentes condiciones. Uno la dejó cuando llegó a la Universidad; el otro pudo encontrar el tiempo suficiente para combinar sus estudios universitarios con los toques de guitarra y hasta llegó a tener varias bandas, en la actualidad se gana la vida tocando profesionalmente.
Estando ya jubilado me entusiasmé de nuevo con el instrumento, tenía casi sesenta años cuando le dije a mi hijo que me acompañara a comprar una guitarra eléctrica y un pequeño amplificador. Él me sirvió de maestro por unos meses hasta que tomó la decisión de irse del país.
Al poco tiempo me di cuenta que mis manos estaban un poco agotadas y que no se daban abasto para cumplir con mi afición a la escritura, lo que amerita estar tecleando varias horas, y para tocar la guitarra. Sin embargo, nunca he desistido del todo. De vez en cuando agarro mi instrumento y le sacó algunas notas, las suficientes como para alimentar mi espíritu.
Quizá no logré aquel sueño juvenil de ser un gran guitarrista, pero por mi persistencia tengo ahora la posibilidad de pasar buenos ratos practicando mis lecciones…Y en verdad eso es algo que siempre agradeceré porque es invalorable la satisfacción que da…

She also found obstacles to climbing, it is a sport that requires a lot of strength and flexibility and she is dealing with a small cervical problem that sometimes is quite annoying.
There was a lot of truth in her reasoning, none of the reasons given were out of the question. However, I was struck by her conviction that these conditions were irremovable...
I commented that perhaps things would be different later on, after all, she was just starting out in life. It was quite likely that she could find the right place to practice drumming without disturbing anyone and surely her neck would improve enough to allow her to take up climbing walls. She lifted her shoulders and nodded as if to be obliging to me.
In matters of personal achievement I try to be cautious. I dare not say that all barriers exist only in our imagination; I recognize that there are environmental issues that we cannot control at will.
However, examining carefully what has been my life, I have no doubt that in many occasions we ourselves are the ones who put the biggest brake by paralyzing ourselves in front of obstacles. And that sometimes we prefer to throw in the towel and not move forward.
Achieving our dreams is mainly a matter that requires discipline, will and determination, ingredients that are not acquired naturally. They are latent in us, in potential, and we can all develop them. But we have to work on them as if they were any other muscle. If we manage to keep that in mind, it is very likely that we will find the motivation to overcome the obstacles.
During my youth I dreamed of playing guitar to be part of a band. I managed to get my guitar and advanced a little, but it was very difficult for me, I didn't have a great auditory acuity to excel. Nevertheless, I persisted in the attempt. The time came when I had to decide and I gave priority to my studies. Then I started my family, my children came along and the guitar was relegated, but never forgotten.
Later on, two of my sons also wanted to play the guitar and both had excellent conditions. One gave it up when he reached the University; the other one was able to find enough time to combine his university studies with guitar playing and he even had several bands, nowadays he makes a living playing professionally.
I was almost sixty years old when I told my son to go with me to buy an electric guitar and a small amplifier. He served as my teacher for a few months until he decided to leave the country.
Soon after, I realized that my hands were a bit exhausted and that they were not enough to keep up with my hobby of writing, which requires several hours of typing, and to play the guitar. However, I have never given up entirely. From time to time I pick up my instrument and play a few notes on it, just enough to feed my spirit.
Maybe I didn't achieve that youthful dream of being a great guitarist, but because of my persistence I now have the possibility of having a good time practicing my lessons...And that is something I will always be grateful for because the satisfaction it gives is priceless....
