One of the meanings of my name is light, and I have always loved light sources, more specifically the sun. One of the many reasons I loved the sunflower. Because it reminded me of the sun and it was so vibrant. Growing up, I was adored by my uncles and I was praised for many things but the two things that likened me to the sunflower were, “Light and vibrance.”
When I first spotted the sunflower, it was growing around a wild bush. I was walking with my uncle and I saw it in the afternoon sun. Amid the weeds, its vibrant yellow separated it from the rest. Letting go of my uncle's hand I ran towards it and stared in awe. It was beautiful and it was one of the closest natural things that reminded me of the sun.
My uncle told me later on that it signified adoration, longevity and loyalty. It was also known as a happy flower. I didn't cut off that particular flower, but every time I saw one, I took it home or put it in my ear to remind myself to be like that sunflower I saw decades ago, shining brightly amid adversaries.
