Winter has returned to the region in Germany where I live 🥶 According to the weather forecast, the temperature will drop below freezing early next week, but after that, it is expected to rise to around 15°C.
It’s cold...! So this week, I had less outdoor activities. I water the plants on my balcony when it was still warm earlier in the week and cycling to submit the contract for my newly rented garden. While I was there, I spent some time daydreaming about how to arrange everything and what to plant 😁
The garden is a bit far from my home, but during spring and summer, it will be a perfect distance for cycling. A friend of mine has the neighboring plot, and the cost was incredibly reasonable—about €100 as an initial fee, including a small shed and other facilities, with an annual fee slightly over €100. Among the gardens I inquired about, the most expensive one was €5,000, and the general range seemed to be around €1,500–€3,000, so I feel very lucky to have found such a good deal.
One great feature of the garden is the large compost bin that came with it. I've already started actively composting vegetable scraps and coffee ground from my kitchen. I plan to take them to the garden by car and keep adding to the compost bin.
This week, I thought about sowing tomato seeds, but it was just too cold to get motivated. The seed packet I recently bought clearly states, "Hobby gardeners should not sow too early indoors—start between late March and April." So, I decided to wait until next week or later. In Germany, summer vegetables are typically transplanted outdoors after mid-May when the risk of frost has passed, so late March should be just fine.
Instead of tomatoes, I started growing broad beans, which I absolutely love. The excitement of having a garden got the best of me, and I ended up starting 32 plants. That’s a lot—how much do I love broad beans? Well, quite a lot 😆
I even have special seed trays designed for deep-rooted plants like broad beans. These trays also work well for growing okra, making them quite handy.
So, that was my slow-paced gardening journal for this week. Once the weather warms up next week, I might finally get to sow my tomatoes—or maybe even more! Either way, I can feel spring approaching, and I'm excited for the 2025 gardening season.
........ I wrote until here and Hive Garden stickers arrived! I proudly brought it to a podcast festival. I put some on the plant containers at the venue.

Strangely it was less costly to print 500 pieces than 200 pieces so of course I went for 500 pieces. I will bring quite a lot to Hive Creators' Day so feel free to ask me some ☺️ I look forward to meeting people with green thumb.

ドイツの私が住んでいる地域では冬が戻ってきています。天気予報によると来週の前半は最低気温がマイナスになる日があり、それを超えると最高気温が15度まで上がる日が来るようです。
ああ寒い・・・！ということで、今週は外での作業は控えめでした。外でしたことといえば、暖かかった週の前半にバルコニーの植物に水やりをして、自転車に乗って新しく借りる庭の契約書を出しに行って、しばし庭でどんな配置にするか、何を植えるか妄想してきました 😁
自宅からは少し遠いのですが、春夏はサイクリングにちょうどよい距離で、友人が隣の庭を借りていて、小屋などすべて込で初期費用が100ユーロほど、年間費用も100ユーロ強。問い合わせた中では5000ユーロという庭が最高額で、周りに聞くと大体1500-3000ユーロというので、とてもお得に借りられたと思います。
庭には大きなコンポストの容器がついていたので、キッチンで出る野菜くずやお茶がらをアクティブにコンポストし始めました。定期的に車で庭に持っていって、コンポスト容器に足していけたらと思っています。
今週はトマトの種をまこうかと思ったのですが、寒くて気が乗らず、最近購入したトマトの種の袋には「家庭での早まきは禁物、3月末から4月にかけてまきましょう」と書いてあったので来週以降に持ち越すことにしました。実際、ドイツでは5月半ばに霜がおりなくなってから夏野菜を地植えするので3月末で十分なんですよね。
トマトの代わりと言ってはなんですが、大好きなそら豆の苗を作り始めました。庭にスペースがあることにうかれて32本も。どれだけ好きなんだと。ええ、大好きです 😆
育苗中に深く根をはるそら豆用のセルトレイも持っているほどです。これ、オクラにも使えて便利なのです。
そんなこんなのスローなガーデンジャーナルでした。来週暖かくなったらトマトをまけるかな、もうちょっとまこうかな。いずれにせよ春が近づいているのを感じて、2025年のガーデニングシーズンが楽しみです。
... とここまで書いたところで、印刷を注文していたHive Gardenのステッカーが届きました。うれしくて今週末出席するポッドキャストのカンファレンスに持ってきました。トークの合間に会場にペタペタ貼っています。

500枚印刷する方がなぜか200枚印刷するよりも安くて、Hive Creators' Dayにたくさん持って行きます。イベント期間中にガーデニング好きな人と繋がるのが楽しみです。
