Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Case: The Silent Threat in Our Homes

Reddit User u/Rbradbury1920 in 2015 posted on the r/legaladvise subreddit where he was searching for legal recourse for a problem he had with his landlord. The legal recourse was to sue his landlord over seeing a yellow note with errands he had never told anyone about, and the handwriting wasn't his. He first thought he wrote in a sleepy state but then he began to wonder why he wouldn't recognize his handwriting. He began to take it seriously when he found another note posted behind his desk chair which said make sure to save your documents.

He began to doubt if anyone had broken in to be playing such pranks on him, so he decided to use a webcam to identify who was doing it but then the following day he saw another note which said "our landlord isn't letting me talk to you but it's important we do". He went to his computer so he can check who it was but then the folder for the webcam had been deleted so he could not find the person.

It was at this point he know that the person dropping the notes saw the webcam and deleted the content. On the first of may, he saw a blank note on his door, and when he went in, he saw so many other notes, empty with nothing written on them. He went to check his house for any note and found a note he received from his landlord when he just moved into the house and he realized that the handwriting were similar.

Let me guess, the landlord is the criminal breaking into the home? Actually, there was another reddit post where he confirmed that on further inspection, the handwriting on the note didn't match up with what he saw, and he soon realize that letter which he saw was from his mom and not his landlord. So his landlord wasn't breaking in but actually, he was the one leaving notes around his house and this was as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

When he was asked to check the amount of CO in his house, the CO detector read if over 100 ppm (Parts per million) and people can usually feel the effect of CO poisoning as low as 10ppm. While inhaling CO in a small amount won't hurt, inhaling it in excess can do a lot of damage. Asides burning, fumes, or smokes, if a house has less ventilation, it can lead to build up of gasses, and when CO builds up in a less ventilated place, the body begins to use the CO instead of using oxygen and this can lead to hypoxia (low oxygen in the blood) and this can lead to increased heart rate, cough, pale or blue skin, and it can lead to confusion and making people delirious.

CO is odorless, and colorless, which means if a person isn't careful it can send them to their graves when they sleep. It wasn't until the reddit user spent a full night outside of his house that he understood his predicament. He felt shivers down his spine and he knew that CO was finding a way into his home and needed to be solved immediately.

This Reddit user's harrowing experience serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. While his initial suspicions pointed towards malicious intent, the truth revealed a far more insidious threat. The story underscores the importance of CO detectors in every home and the vigilance required to protect against this silent killer. It's a cautionary tale that highlights the critical need for awareness and preventive measures to safeguard against the potentially fatal effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.
