Everyone wants to be a celebrity; social media has portrayed them to be gods; not just that, social media gives us pictures that they are stinkingly rich, whereas what we see online is not always true or real.
Public figures are seen as role models in our society. There are so many expectations about them, and people expect them to deliver exceedingly well, not minding whatever it is they have on their plates. When they finally don't match up to people's expectations, then they become people's enemies, and different stories will start popping up about them just to ruin their reputation. Some of these celebrities do feel the hit when they are being dragged on social media while some don't even bother themselves about what they publish about them.
Some months ago, a popular actress and producer in the film-making industry in Nigeria known as Nollywood, Funke Akindele was dragged on social media over the death of one of her colleagues who was once under her tutelage. This came with lots of criticism and insults, many of her fans supported her during the hard time on social media. Many tweeted a lot of harsh things about her calling her different names such as selfish and uncompassionate. Many pass judgment on her without knowing the real story behind that incident.
Was she selfish? Was she stingy? These were the questions I asked myself. Then, though I had no idea of what happened, I could only give my judgment based on several publications on social media. Some said she reached out to the late lady when she was sick and gave her a certain amount of money for treatment while some said she didn't give her any money nor did she show up. The taunting was so much and despite what she was going through at that time, no one seemed to care about how she felt.
It got to a point where she couldn't bear it anymore, and she had to come out to face the social media critics. Then she asked if any of these people criticizing her knew what she was going through. After all, she was a human before becoming a well-known celebrity. This means people did not consider her feelings before taunting her. She explained how she got in touch with the lady in question before her demise despite her busy schedule and the challenges she was facing in her marriage, and then every of the hearsay died down.
Some will come on social media to call out some celebrities, saying they are stingy and selfish because they requested financial assistance from them and weren't able to give a response. Firstly, it might be they had a lot on their plate too or they wish not to assist but whichever way it is, they are working hard for their money, you should do the same. A wise man always tells me that a good way not to get disappointed in life is not to expect too much from people.
Social media portrays so much unreal and untrue information about these celebrities, and when one finally meets them in reality, one will be forced to compare what is online to what one can see right in front of one's face. The best way to live is just to cut one's coat according to one's size. Social media can be deceiving; many want to live large like their role models and get themselves under unnecessary pressure, which is not supposed to be. I won't say celebrities are stingy, nor will I say they are generous; whatever view you have about them is an individual's choice to make. If I meet any celebrity who is generous today, I will surely testify that he or she is generous and vice versa which means I am liable to my thoughts.
