Stained

Clear the days and blue the skies
Swift the feet and bright the eyes
Looking up and far ahead
To treasured times and dreamy lies.

Life planned ahead so close to true
The search was over when I found you
Under the lights above
From moments first and onward through.

Promises of forever chosen to spend
From sweetened beginning to bitter end
Across the better on into worse
Made in heaven and to hell will lend.

Mended seams split far apart
Shattered twice a rebuilt heart
A long broken smile slides away
An unpromised end at a forgotten start.

The only true outcome that matters to me
Is the one desire that I'll never see
A clean break will never heal
And in that emptied void I'll be.

As long as there are things to fill
Avoidance to buy and travel to thrill
Goodness means so little to you
And for me there's only a bitter pill.

Dreams slipped away unretained
Light falls away completely drained
