Happy New Year everyone! I personally didn't do much or any partying last night. As a matter of fact I went to bed around ten P.M. However, at midnight I was promptly awakened by a flurry of fireworks outside. I'm not sure who made all the racket, but from midnight until one A.M. there were lots of booms. I almost felt like I was in a war zone!
Incidentally, it's also Hive Power Up Day being the first day of the month. I tend to power up throughout the month periodically rather than save it for HPUD. But without fail, I like to at least do the minimum power up each first of the month. Today was no exception.
It always feels good to add to my Hive Power. This past year it felt great to reach six thousand HP done organically. I will be continuing with Saturday Savers this year and be setting some goals come this Saturday, so stay tuned!
These posts always tend to run kind of short so I like to add in something precious metal related. I am a member of the Silver Gold Stackers community, and it's fun to share some silver or gold that you've picked up recently. Today's is one that I found in a jewelry shop some time back, it's 95 years old and in great shape. Far better shape than I will be in if I were to live that long...
About the coin:
From numista.com
This coin is 90% silver and was minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US for the Panamanian government. There were 300,000 produced so they aren't really uncommon, except in mint state which this one is not. It's had some wear and was circulated but not too badly. It's always fun to think who might have carried this coin in the pocket or purse almost one hundred years ago!
An interesting fact about Panama is that since they separated from Columbia in 1903 they have used the US Dollar as their currency. So these coins would have been circulating along side Liberty Walking half dollar. The Balboa is pegged to the US dollar and the US dollar is still an important part of their currency.
The reverse side of the coin carries the image of conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa. Balboa was the conquistador that conquered Panama and the first person to found a city on mainland American soil. He was also the first European the see the Pacific Ocean. Although very successful in his occupation his life came to a very bad end as he was captured by a competing conquistador and was beheaded. Life as a conquistador had it's downsides...
That will wrap up my post today. Again, Happy New Year and I hope it's filled with good fortune and sky high crypto prices. I'm also hoping to see silver make a nice recovery as well, but that may take a little longer. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thank you everyone for all of your support, it is greatly appreciated. Let's make it a great year everyone!
